Inefficient teething?

Just a question for other parents out there. How long did it take after your child first showed signs of teething for the first tooth to actually pop through? My son has been showing signs of teething since he was 2 months old. The doctor took a look then and said "Oh yeah, it's definitely teething." However, he's 8 months old now, and that first tooth still hasn't popped through. I know it's something everyone has to go through, but it's hard seeing him be so miserable without even getting anything for it. I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong that it's taking so long. The tooth does look pretty close to the surface, like it could pop through any day now, but it's been that way for months. Anyone have any thoughts?

I am not totally sure about the time frame but my daughter took so long that I took her to the doctors three times. The doctor said it is pretty normal and I shouldn't really worry about it. Once that first one came through the next just seemed to follow without any problems. It also took my daughter a long time to start losing teeth, but once the frist one fell out, the rest started dropping like flies. I remember hating htat feeling of worthlessness, because there really was just nothing I could do that really helped her. I mean, we gave her homeopathic teething remedies and made sure she had teething rings to chew on, although she actually liked an ice cube wrapped in a towel better than anything we bought at the store. I think my doctor said we didn't really need to worry about it all until she was a year old. If she still hadn't had any teeth pop through by then, then she would have started doing some testing. But they did pop through before that. My doctor had to keep reminding me that all the books and information you get about how kids develope are really just guidelines and not set in stone. She said every child is different and developes at diferent speeds. Once I got that through my head, I was a lot less freaked out by things. So i wouldn't worry to much about it right now. If it does go on for a few more months then you might have something to worry about, but right now I'd say he is just fine. Just keep your doctor informed. I bet before you know it he will have teeth popping out all the time.

Hey I just noticed that was my 1000 post. How exciting for me. Thanks for giving me a good discussion to respond to for that 1000 post threshhold.

Thanks for responding! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one to feel this way! I just feel so helpless to do anything for him. Of course we give him teething rings and remedies and such, but none of it makes it all better. I guess I really didn't know that much about kids before I had one, and I knew teething hurt but I didn't know it would last so long! I feel a bit better to know it's not abnormal for it to take so long. I guess it also just seemed odd because my son is BIG, so I've seen kids half his size with teeth already. =p Oh, and congrats on your 1000th post! *sprays confetti*

It really depends on the tooth. My sons first four popped through within days of breaking the skin. Then his molars, I think I saw a bump then they came through after a month. He would wake up crying and chewing on his fingers or any random object would go back there. Is he getting chapped from all that drool? If he is, put some lanisoh cream on it, that works great and since you can use it during nursing, it's not a problem if he gets a little in his mouth. Good luck!

Yup, the chewing on everything is so much fun. =p He is getting a little chapped. To be honest I had just been smearing chapstick all over his face, which seems to work well. Lansinoh sounds like a good idea, though. I think I have some even. Thanks!

All of my kids started teething around 3-4 months. My oldest got her first two teeth at 7 1/2 months and didn't get any more until she was 13/14 months old. My middle two kids got their first teeth at 6 months. My youngest just got her first teeth at Christmas--she was 8 1/2 months old. She is 10 1/2 months old and still only has 2 teeth.

Thanks for your response! It's always interesting to hear from people with several children about the differences and similarities in their development. It's amazing how much different kids can be, even within the same family.

Try to use a teether for the child to bite on so the tooth will find it's way out of the gums..That is the typical thing to do..or try to go to a dentist and ask for a suggestion on this.

My children all got teeth at around 6-8 months and would come in 3-4 at time I remember my oldest it was so hard to watch him suffer. My grandmother gave me the best remedy though. She took and undyed leather belt and cut it into 3x3 squares and I gave them to the kids to chew on worked great and the teeth seemed to break through quicker.

My son had teething symptoms when he was 4 months old but I ever seen his first 2 teeth pop through until his first birthday. Then finally the rest followed. My daughter got her first teeth when she was around 10 months.I have heard every child is different as to when their first teeth will show.My husbands friends daughters first teeth never came in until about 18 months and she said she had to feed her soft food almost similiar to baby food(she I think fed her baby food as well or mashed it up).She said the doctor had told her it was normal and some kids are late bloomers.

My son pops them through in a couple of days. He started at around 2 months, and had 2 teeth by 4 months. He's 14 months now and has 16! Only 4 more to go! :-) 6 months with no change seems like a long time. Do you let him chew on hard things? Teething rings, biscuits, bagels, etc? Put oragel on it at night and give him tylenol for the pain. As long as the doctor says it's ok, it probably is. They see so many kids they probably do take a while sometimes.

Thanks for responding! I think it's great that your son is having an easy time with it! I do let him chew on hard things, and we have used oragel, tylenol, and homeopathic teething tablet. Not much luck as of yet. It'll stop the pain for a little bit, but it's back before too long. The doctor told us we could use the oragel if we want, but that since babies drool so much not much of it stays in their mouth long enough to do much good.

I don't know, I mean with all of my other kids, my oldest son cut teeth at 6 months, second was 6-7 months, third was 6-7 months, fourth was 2 months, and my youngest is 8 months - has been teething since 2 months old but has no teeth! I am worried about it, but I know she will cut them in due time.

Some kids show signs for months before they break through. Cold teething rings usually help a lot. So popsicles. The teething rings when cold help ease the pain and the little ripples help to soften the skin so that it is easier for the teeth to pop through. Hope the baby feels better

Oh dear your poor son with his teething as for my children their teeth started to show when they were around 6 months old some of my children had problem with their teething but it never took long once they were showing to come through. I would not see a doctor about it but have you seen a baby clinic as they may be able to help you more as they see quite a lot of babies nearly all the time.

You will have to wait for that tooth to come out. Usually they come in twos. Pairs I mean. For most babies the two front teeth from below are the first ones to come out. Parents are bothered when this is happening because, the baby goes through a lot of pain just for it taking place. And it seems to take forever for the teeth to finally pop. The mother's woes are so much as it is common for the baby to have slight fever, lbm, and many other signs of discomfort. Don't be too anxious, the doctor and your husband are around to help you go through the experience. You'll surely manage it fine just as all other mothers do.

Thanks for your response. I am trying to be calm about it, I realize it's probably not too big a deal, it's just no fun to see my baby hurting. Of course you're right, everyone has to go through it!

My little boy has been teething since around 2 months old also, he too is 8 months old and has cut his first tooth a few days ago and last night cut his second one next to it, he now has his bottom two teeth within a week and has started going through the night again... I understand how hard it is seeing your baby in such pain and being so uncomfortable, and sleepless ngts r no fun at all, but he will get his first tooth soon don't worry, try giving him hard things to bite on like carrot sticks and milk biscuits, that will help the skin thin for the tooth to cut through, ashton and parsons teething powders are great for relaxing a teething baby so give them a try, if you still have concerns speak to your health visitor and she can advise you further. Hope i helped a little

My daughter was the same way, 6 weeks old the pediatrician said it had begun & she finally had her 2 bottom ones pop through last week @ 7 months old & were still working on more. I hate feeling so helpless. I think the thing that helped my daughter the most was a vibrating teether, its made by the first years company, i bought it at walmart for like $10, but it helped alot. Also my pediatrician said to not use orajel on her because it makes her gums harder & would cause her to teeth longer, she reccomended teething tablets by Hyland's & infants tylenol. I belive these have made it easier on her, you can tell a drastic difference in her when she hasn't had anything for her teething. Good Luck
