Guess what I'm eating!

Braunschweiger - I’ve heard many people refer to Braunschweiger as “liver sausage” and also “liverwurst”. Actually they are not the same thing. I’ve learned that Braunschweiger is very similar to liverwurst but liverwurst is more “pure” liver sausage where Brauschweiger often contains dairy products and is spreadable.

Braunschweiger! My Mom told me years ago that when I crave liver or Braunschweiger it means my body is saying it needs iron. Growing up I hated anything that had anything to do with "liver", yuk. But as an adult I have found myself actually wanting and enjoying fried liver and/or Braunschweiger. Is there something you hated to eat or do when you were young that you enjoy now your older? Do you eat or do it all the time now or just occasionally like me? Would you make your children eat or do something you didn't like as a child? The description of the photo here tells more details about Braunschweiger.

Oooh...I love liver now as well; would gag and want to hurl when I was a kid even smelling it. I like just about everything now except, hominy, okra and lima beans... I remember my mom forcing us to eat our veggies and swore that I'd never do that to my children; I make them take a bite of it but won't make them eat it all. Eventually, from doing this, they have grown to eat their veggies and enjoy them. By the way, I can't get a PM to you; been trying to respond to your latest but nothing happens. Can you PM me you're email address until they fix the problem..? Thanks ;)

Now I made all my kids "try" everything but liver. I never ever made them eat that and when I got one of my cravings they would leave the house. Hey, new invention instead of bug repelant it's "kids repelant"

Cute remark, byfaithonly, I got a big smile out of that. Of course, I will have to try that out. Another thing I would do with my son is I love all kinds of licorice except black. So I would buy a bunch of different kinds and put all of them in my desk drawer except the black. That I would leave sitting ontop of my desk and when my son would come in I would ask him if he wanted a piece of licorice and he would say yes at first. When he would come over and look down at my desk and look at me and call me a smart aleck. Then he would walk away. The reason I would do that is because he would eat all of my licorice and when I went to get any it was all gone. But he did figure out my scheme and then once again my licorice was not safe! Go figure.

cake - A wedding cake
I have the cravings for sweet. I need to have them after every meal and if I didnt get I get very desperate. Even my mom has the same thing and I suppose my children will also have this kind of liking.

I love liver and always have. Most people think that I am just plain weird. I cannot think of anything that I hated to eat as a child. We didnt really have alot of choices as far as food goes. We raised our own meat, veggies and fruit. That is what we had to eat. Except in hunting season. Then we also had deer and squirrel to eat. I love most foods.

Squirrel story: just after I was divorced my oldest son 15 or so at the time, decided he was now the man of the house and was going to "put food on the table" he headed out to the woods intent on getting some rabbit. As he went out the door I said fine but no squirrel, there's next to no meat on them (we were feeding 5)". Off he went and returned in a few hours. With nothing but "a" squirrel. He proudly announced though, "It's a really really big squirrel Mom, really". We each got about a bit, but thankfully I had thawed out some porkchops from the freezer.

When I was growing up I hated it when my mom made liver. Yuck! But we always had to eat it. I would drown mine in ketchup to get it down. Now, as an adult, I really enjoy liver the way my mom made it...even plain! lol... Yum... Braunschweiger. I've always liked that for some strange reason. My mom used to make this Braunschweiger dip that was SOOOO good! I'll have to ask her for that now. It's making me hungry for that. I couldn't stand Broccoli when I was growing up. Now I love it! We don't eat it as often as we would like to due to the cost. It's gone up so much over these past couple of years. I make my children eat/try to eat all kinds of food....even peas. I could never - and still can't - stand peas. But my husband and two older boys like them, so for us to get the toddlers to eat them, I will *happily* choke them down. HA! Usually doesn't fool them though! I want my children to try everything possible, and to NOT be restricted on what they eat or like because of what *I* eat or like. I would like them to develop their own tastes of things, and to be as healthy as possible. If that means me making sacrificies by eating things that make me gag (peas), then so be it. It's worked for my two older boys because they love them now. Hopefully it will work for the toddlers as well one day.

I used to hate red beets and now I like them a lot. I used to sit at the table when I was younger and stick them in my pockets and when I was done I would go to the bathroom and flush them down the toilet. My mom couldn't believe it the other day when she asked me if I still hate red beets and when I told her I actually love them now she couldn't believe it. I love liver. My son does not. He is married and has three children and we were talking about liver. He looked at me and informed me that if I ever didn't want him to be here all I had to do was cook liver. He can not even stand the smell of it in the house. When he told me that it was in a joking way but I knew that he meant it because he can not stand the smell.

Too funny, I used to do the same exact thing with peas. Mom and I got a big laugh a few years ago we were talking about it. My thing was peas, what got me caught that is. Mom went in the bathroom after me one night and not all of them had flushed. My punishment was she opened a can of peas and I had to sit at the table and eat a helping - with her watching every second. The joke was what I hated were frozen peas (what we had for dinner that night) I actually like canned peas, my punishment...

One other thing is I expected my son to at least take a taste if he didn't like it than he didn't have to eat it after that.

byfaithonly, I can just picture what was going through your mind as you were eating the peas. Bring on some more punishment mom. Mom found out because of course red beets leave a stain in the pocket after the beets have vacated the area. I have to say she was pretty cool about it. She normally didn't bother with the laundry because with ten kids the chores get deligated around. But for a week there mom was always in the vicinity of the washer when it was my turn to do the cloths and of course she always made sure there were beets served with the meal. She asked me as I was sorting out the cloths what the red stuff was in my pocket. I looked at her and came up with some off the wall story about putting my hand in my pocket after we had art with paint. My mom could always tell when we were lying. So she committed that she noticed that this happened on a regular basis and she was going to have to talk to my art teacher. She had me stammering and stuttering and after a half hour I finally fessed up. She did the same thing your mom did but it took me a couple of hours to finally eat what she put on a plate in front of me.

From the term 'Braunschweiger' I understand you're German. Am I right? I'm Indian. Whenever I sit down to Non-Veg meals, I too hate eating the liver, though my fellow citizens seem to crave it! When I was in school(ages ago), I distinctly remember buying tinned sardines just to taste it and see why Europeans and US people buy such items. Yukhhhhh! I couldn't stand the taste of it. I almost threw up! But then, I still don't know how to consume a can of 'tinned sardines'! Can you tell me how?

We grew up eating liver and gizzards and kidneys. My grandmother used to make kidneys and chicken livers all the time, also liver and onions. My son does like braunschweiger, but he doesn't eat any of those other items I mentioned. I never forced him to eat anything like that.

Wow I did not realize that when our body is craving liver that it meant anything that is amazing, I know I love it a lot but do not eat it all the time but when I go without it for awhile I must buy some more of it. I used to hate eating pumpkin, when I was young but now I love my pumpkin. No I do not make my children eat something that I don't like as I remember when I was young that we had to eat what was put in front of me.

I've never had braunschweiger but I love liverwurst which is the non fancy name of pate de foi gras. When I was little mum would cook liver. We call it lamb's fry. You had to soak the liver in salted water for several hours...these days it's not necessary. My Mum always overcooked the slices of liver so they dried out but she also cooked onion and bacon then made this amazingly thick and rich gravy with the pan juices. It would be served with mashed potato and peas. I still cook it and people are amazed because it's considered old fashioned. I hated spinach, beans, cabbage, cauliflour, swede, turnip, carrots and brussel sprouts. I don't eat spinach much because you have to have it fresh. I've discovered that small young carrots are brussel sprouts are yummy but the older stuff is tough. I still hate turnip and swede and parsnip as well. I also hated tripe (gag) and cannot even bear to look at it but luckily I rarely see it. We always had potato with out meals and we absolutely had to eat everything even if we were driven to tears by gagging (it was so demeaning)I loved potato so I would mix the stuff I hated with it to make it go down. Sometimes there was too much yucky stuff and not enough potato. To this day I have to clean my plate. How weird is that?

First of all, I love Braunschweiger, and always did as a kid too!! I like chicken livers too!! When I was younger, I remember one time we got chinese food take out (very unusual as my mom cooked every day) and I must have had a stomach bug or something because it made me violently ill. I didn't eat chinese food for years and years because of that! Now as an adult, I absolutely love chinese food!! I let my kids make their own choices when it comes to food. I have one picky eater, and one that will try everything at least once. They are 16 and 21 now, so they pretty much make their own decisions (very different food choices by the way). I do make both of them take vitamins everyday in case they're missing important nutrients in their daily choices!! :)

Yuk yuk yuk! I think I dislike liver simply by hearing the name called / seeing it written: LIVER eeeew. Sorry, I don't want to put you off, maybe I will like it when I'm older, but right now I hate the sound of it. I used to be very very finicky about food as a child. I suppose one thing I've grown from hating to loving is mushrooms (cooked)! It's weird how one's tastebuds change drastically - I used to eat fish, but can't bare that now. Again, I think I'll grow to like fish, but it really doesn't appeal to me! The only real meat I like is chicken! Interesting discussion.
