Do you color your hair? Do you change your natural color or highlight?

I used to color my hair to lighten it up, especially in the winter, but then I go so tired of having different colored roots . . . I have tried just the highlighting hair color and it seems to be so much easier to color just the strips through my hair, and as it is growing out it is not obvious at all that I did a color job. I just bought another box and will be highlighting my hair again this weekend. I think it looks more natural and I was happy with the 1st time I did this. How about you? Do you color? Change the color completely? Or highlight? Do you do it yourself or at a salon?

Both my parents were prematurely grey before they were 30. My brothers and I started going grey around 18. I am currently 50% grey and only 34 years old. If I don't color my hair the grey makes my hair look very dull. Currently I am coloring my hair brown. I used to go platnum blonde because blond it the only thing that will completely hide the grey. Once my hair goes completely white I will stop coloring. But for right now, color away. My hubby and I own a salon so he does my hair. But I am so lax about my hair that usually Iwill wait unitl the very last minute to get it done!

wow. you own a salon. that's great. and yep. there are those who color their hair because they want to cover up the gray hair. which is just reasonable for them.

I try to cover up my gray hairs that are coming in but the color just doesn't seem to want to take on them. I usually wait and wait and put it off til I can't take it anymore and then I HAVE to do my hair.

I do all of the above, normally at home by myself. I highlight when I want to add subtile change or diminsion to my hair. I color all over if I want a certain look. The roots suck, but those are easily repaired with a touch up kit. The highlight cap works the best if you're doing it yourself at home.

I do it all myself too. I am blonde and even when I try to dye the same or similar color you could always tell when the roots came in -- I think I like the highlighting way as the roots are not as obvious at all. Thanks for commenting!

I do not do a single thing to my hair. There really isn't anything that I can do. It is naturally dark (some say black, others say a dark red in the sunlight), but it is just unusually dark. Anyway, I have always been asked if I dye it black, since it is so dark, but no I do not. Once, I experimented, back in high school with some highlight stuff, and it was not that great on me. Once I need to color it (which will be soon, since we grey easily in my family), then, I will have to. But for now, ALvira it is.

I go to a salon as well as color my own hair at home. I think I prefer going to the salon, but I don't like the price...lol My hair is extremely dry now and I think it's from coloring at home. I just got my hair done last week at a salon, and it looked sooooo good, I'm thinking I might try and go more often. I think the condition of my hair is better now too. I've never tried highlights at home, I can barely color it right myself, so I'd hate to see highlights!! I color mine blonde because I have so many greys, the blonde just matches since they are really stubborn!! The older the kids got, the lighter the hair got!!! Good discussion shady!! Thanks!! :)

Thanks! The people at the hair salon told me that dying and redying your whole head really dries out and damages your hair. They said to just do the roots when they grow out and not redo your whole head. Makes sense. I use a good shampoo and conditioner daily and that really helps.

I'm not really good at fixing myself up, much more manage my hair, so I'm very dependent on beauty salons. I am not very sure if I would still like to have my hair colored or highlighted because the chemicals of the coloring are too much for my hair, and it's now damaged. I think I'll simply have hair cellophane (colored) because it's safer. But if my hair got healthier, I think I would prefer highlights to total hair coloring because as you've said, it doesn't look nice when the hair is growing (with different color above than below). Haha!

Doing your own hair can be hard. I know I have trouble seeing just what I am doing in the back! Thanks for your comments.

Yes I get my hair colored but I get it done at my salon (I work at a salon so it's free for me). Hair color at the salon is a lot less harsh on your hair than box color. Plus the stylists dont make it so noticable that you had your hair redone (you know...having 3 different colored stripes in your hair from where your roots grew out. I usually make my hair darker in the winter and when summer comes I'll highlight it and go blonde.

You are lucky to work where you can get your hair done! That's a good idea about darker in the winter and lighter in the summer -- that is the natural way to go!

no. i don't need to. i love the color of my hair. i have a black straight shiny hair. so, there's no need to for me. i knew friends who go to the salon to have their hairs colored. usually their hair is black but wanted it to be colored to burgandy, brown or black brown. it's fashion these days. some also just buy a box of hair colors from stores since it is more than 50 percent cheaper doing it at home than going to salons.

I have always loved long straight black hair ~ I have blonde hair and could never dye mine black as it would look really strange I would think! lol

I color my hair close to the color I have but with a little auburn tint to it. When it starts to grow out and I don't take the time to color it is no biggie because well real close to what I am naturally.

Well I color my hair. I have now for a good 15 years or so. Originally I had very blonde hair with dark roots and red highlights. I was always accused of dying it. I finally did to a color that looks better on me. I dye it red/auburn. Now of course I have tons of grey and silver in my hair, have since my late 20's so I still dye it.

I've done both but lately I've been colouring it since more gray seems to be popping out! LOL! I've gone back to my own colour because my roots were coming out and it looked horrible! Maybe I'll just stick to my own colour when I'm colouring because I hate when the roots come in!

That was a nice thing to do for your friend. If you ever decide to go wild and crazy with your hair again, at least there are lots of products out there for you to use! lol

Yes, I do color my hair but mostly the box kind at home. I haven't tried any highlight coz I am not sure how it will look on me. When I color my hair I simply choose the medium brown to complement my complexion. I don't use bright colors or touch of red coz I don't think it will suit me.

I colour my hair as well as highlighting and lowlighting. I have it done at a hairstyling school to save money. I've been going there for almost 2 decades now. My hair is light brown naturally (well okay, lots of grey nowadays) so the lowlights really blend into the roots and don't make the regrowth quite as obvious. I love being blonde though and wouldn't go back!

They have a couple hairstyling schools by me (well within 20-25 miles), but I have never tried one. It just has not been convienient time or travel wise. I've heard good things about using the schools - sounds like you have found a great place to go.

I used to color my hair but I do only highligths. I don't have the courage to completely change my hair color and have a new look. But I don't do it alone. I always go to the salon. That way they can always give me suggestions on what's the best hair color for my skin color.

I just use peroxide. A little bit of peroxide brings out your natural highlights. Use a few squirts from a spray bottle.

I do both...color and highlight. I prefer the salon to do it, but I can't afford it much so I usually just do it at home. I need to get some highlights to do again, though. I hate doing it myself, though because I have a reddish tint to my hair so any blond I put in my hair just turns a reddish color. I like the salon to do it because they can get it blond.

Well, for me, I don't really like to color my hair. I just want it's natural color. By the way, the color of my hair is black.

I started to color my hair for just something different but now the grey hairs have come and now I don't have a choice. First I colored myself and then started going to salon cause wanted some highlights but now money is a little tight so been doing myself again. Have never done highlite myself though. Seems complicated.

I prefer highlighting to doing a full head color. Why? because it looks more natural and when it grows out, it doesn't look as obvious. And for someone like me who can't afford to do it very often, that's an important factor. I do it at a salon because it is "my" time off from three kids and a busy household. Not cheap but I usually feel like a million bucks when I walk out of the salon.
