New or used?Skates for a kid

I am debating on the purchase of skates for my 5 year old.I know he wont wear them long and will need a new pair next year.But..they say the skates form the shape of your foot and its not good to buy used.What do you think?

With the prices of skates nowadays, I refuse to buy new ones for my daughter. If I happen to find a pair that is currently her size at a garage sale, I'll buy them cause she doesn't use them much. Once her feet stop growing, then I'll buy her a new pair of skates. Not sure if skates form to the shape of your foot or not but my daughter never complained of any skates that I buy her other than she don't like the kind I buy. lol
