SHERRYBABY, directed by Laurie Collyer and starring Maggie Gyllenhaal would probably be better titled: SHERRYBOOBY or perhaps SHERRY’S BOOBIES. A low budget “star vehicle” for Maggie Gyllenhaal to show off her assets, SHERRYBABY is about a woman who returns home from a three year prison sentence and wishes to reconnect with her young daughter.
Now then, about those “assets”: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s performance is stellar. Truly she shows off her acting talents in full, but it doesn’t do much good to have such a character as she is able to bring to life and not have an original, compelling story to go along with it. The formula for the plot is average and dull without any real entertainment value. Possibly this was meant to be “real” and tells the experience of someone who was involved, however there is nothing of value to satisfy the viewer and make them feel like they just watched a good movie. It is a real shame too, because not having any value in telling the story makes the end results seem like the movie was an excuse to keep displaying Maggie’s breasts.
Most critics agree that Maggie’s performance in the sub-par role is high-caliber. Danny Trejo is who I want to see getting some credit though. His role is minimal in the film, however, I think after all these years of being the “rough looking Mexican with all those tattoos” in movies, Danny let on that he has some real acting chops. Too bad the young child actor playing Maggie’s daughter in the film could not have the same skills as her older counterparts. Ryan Simpkins makes being a little kid look awkward, forced, and she kept looking towards the camera.
All the quotes on the front of the DVD scream out about how “sizzling” and “two thumbs up” Maggie’s performance is, but put them into the context of full reviews and one is liable to find that those promotional blurbs are an attempt to hide the truth about this movie: it’s a flop!
Celebrity nude sites will get the most from this film having been made, but overall SHERRYBABY covers zero new ground and fails to give you a reason to watch. Hopefully Maggie Gyllenhaal will be able to use this experience to land her something really great; save your rental cash for that.
