It sure is. It is named after John Mantagu the 4th Earl of Sandwich in 1762. The Sandwich Islands are also named after him

Sorry that should be Montagu. The British aristocracy had the habit of addressing each other by the name of their holding. For example if you were John Smith lord of Darwin, they would call you darwin, not smith
