Does anyone care to share their philosophy on how you live your life?

The philospher Socrates - This is a bust of the Athenian philosopher Socrates,
(469-399). Socrates was mostly interested in ethics.
Why we do what we do. Who we are.

Mine is the same with cyndhirella coz i believe in karma. i think of this line before saying or doing anything and as much as possible, as much as i can control my emotion, i follow this. If people just live by this, then there would be harmony. But that would be like dreaming an impossible dream right? ^__^

You're absolutely correct. Karma exists. It doesn't matter what name it is given, you create your own energy and future by your actions. Life is driven by our passions. These are what gives us reason to live. As you said, how we control our emotions (passions) is what's going to determine what we will eventually get in return. I'm with you when it comes to dreaming the impossible dream. People have and are proving they can't control themselves.

Karma is indeed the equivalent to consequences. However, karma is also positive spiritual recompense. Newton's law that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction applies to exactly what you said. I agree, we many times act without thinking. That is our downfall. I wish we all could control the extent of control our passions have on us.

i guess karma can be equivalent to consequences right? Like in the cause-and-effect relationship, it is the effect, right? coz i believe that every action, even the tiny itsy bitsy little action, generates a reaction. and let me add with passion that we are also dictated/guided by our instincts. I think we react most of the time by our instinct and that we cant really think first before we act.

I have thought about this too many times to remember. Its a great discussion; my philosophy is that we each put on this earth as a part of a whole, interacting together with each having his or her own reality as it seems to them. I am most happy when I can change the life of another for the better by helping or contributing in some way. It is a dog eat dog world, and when you can help this world/other people/lives, it gives great satisfaction. If we lived in a perfect world; everyone would give a little of themselves everyday. Its possible that this kind of philosophy would make this world a much better place for everyone. I hope that didnt sound too cheesy.

If it comes from the depths of your mind than it's not cheesy in the slightest. Sometimes the simplest philosophies of life work the best. That's a problem man has. As a collective whole we complicate things that don't need to be. As you said, interacting together in each other's reality and helping one another is a source of great satisfaction. Even a simple "Thank you" or a smile, may be all that the other person needed. Not a million dollars but a single gesture. Wouldn't it be nice if each of us did give a little of ourselves to another. Unfortunately mankind is a selfish species. And to be frank, by my assessment, destined to extinction unless we change very drastically.

The world stops for an hour for us LOST fans, doesn't it. What a wonderful place this would be if we did have the temperament of a Golden Retriever. Those things you mentioned as an end, are all quite possible. Even an alien invasion could be plausible. We simply don't know what's out there. When it comes to questions I don't have answers for, I don't doubt anything until proof is given one way or the other. Even then I question.

Your right.. there are so many things that people are kept in the dark about. Government holds so many secretes; its crazy. Lost was pretty good this week, they finally got back to the island. Loved the part with the van, and cant wait to see what the French woman does with Kate.

Mine is short and simple-- 'Life is a one shot deal.' So in everything you do and wish in life, do it with all passion for we could only live our life just once. There will be no turning back so strike your dreams bull's eye and be fulfilled!

Short, simple and so right on. Love life, live it, with no regrets in the end. Make sure you've done your best to fulfill your dreams. Even if everything isn't accomplished, at least it was attempted. Way to go Jen.

That is the least we can do for each other. Guiding one another is a two way street. What I can do for others I do. What I can't do I hope others will. Perhaps one day we'll all see the light and realize we need each other's help to truly live a civilized life.

I live my life adhering to the principles of peace, equality and mutual understanding with the people I came in contact with. No war can occur if each one of us could be able to win the ultimate war within ourselves. Sometimes, the greatest battle is the battle within. As Sir Edmund Hilary said,"It is not the mountains we conquer, but ourselves."

Ah, so true. It is within each of us that the turmoil is always stirring. Those who do practice peace, equality and mutual understanding have all but quelled this internal battle. We each have the ability to do so but we chose to remain at war with ourselves, thusly at war with the world. If more of us practiced these virtues that you hold dear than, yes, someday there may be rest amongst mankind.

mine is also about karma, that we do to others will always have a positive and negative reaction. another is, all things in this world united, be it living or non-living.

If more people understood what you have said then this world would be a more tranquil and humane place. You're right about all things being united by a common bond. This is what's known as sacred mathematics, geometry, to be specific. ‹(°¿°)›

You brought it up? I never said it was possible. I simply said it would be a better world IF people could understand and tolerate each other. Why change your mind about all things being bound together? There's nothing imaginary about it. Unfortunately you are correct, what most people only see is themselves. The answer is simple. "We all need to open our minds to alternative beliefs while respecting each other." The process is complicated. "People are closed minded and don't see beyond their selfishness."

but i guess that is impossible. each and everyone of us have different minds, understandings and views. i really wish that all of us could be united since we are all living in one Earth. about the bond, it's very imaginary. as many people dont see or feel this bond. what they can only see is only their self. too bad we have different understandings of things happening around us.

I guess mine would have to be to live life one day at a time. Due to some extreme family troubles, it seems it's the only thing that gets me through. I try to go on each day, with hope for miracles. My only other way of living life....love, respect, and sharing. I live simple for the most part, and this is my faith ...to love all things living, respect all things, and share what i can whenever i can.

It sounds great to me. It's a miracle every day we rise again. Considering the family tribulations you must be going through, I'd say it's so much more so for you. For those who go through hard times and still manage to have your faith and philosophy, it is testament to the goodness in mankind. Now if we can get more people to think this way perhaps more of us won't look so negatively on our own lives.

Without a doubt those two things are some of the easiest and hardest to live by. It seems that more & more these days we tend to think only of ourselves. Nice to know there are people who still have a good balance of humbleness and drive.

You could never fail with that philosophy. If only we all could hold ourselves to a standard where respect and tolerance was the norm, then mankind wouldn't be going in the direction it currently is.

Mine is "you don't know what life is unless you grow older." This is a translation of a philosophical lines in a Korean film. The main character, who is a very young girl, in the film tried her very best to be a TV script writer. But all her works were bounced back by the authorities of the TV station. They all said her works carried no meaning of life in them. As the script writer was under a depression, her friend told her to keep working for as she lived longer, she would find the meaning of life very soon.

I was just discussing that with someone else. It is absolutely true. The older we get the more we understand that we didn't know as much as we thought we knew as a youth. Hopefully as we age we grow with knowledge of life as well. The only problem with gaining wisdom as we get older is, we don't have as much time to enjoy it.

If life were a game of darts I'd say this response would be a bullseye. In today's world it's all too easy to become content in one's ways. Being accepted is much easier than being original so people cater to what they think others wish them to be. ‹(°¿°)›

Here we go back to reading between the lines. Life is a stage isn't it. People sure do put on some lovely masks. I couldn't agree more. Don't forget where they hang their masks after the show. In their (what I call) cookie cutter houses, with their 2.7 children and 1.5 pets. With the SUV out front that only varies from their neighbor's by it's color. In the living room where they "entertain" not party. Need I say more about these robots? ‹(°¿°)›

*smiles a little* Our world has become the stage in the theatre called the universe. People climb upon the stage and put on pretty masks and strut around the stage..when behind the curtain lies falseness, the true drama, and the true plays on power that they mimic on stage. It's a place where little is true on the surface..and you have to read between the lines for the virtues and truths.

Hey Anniedup, Higgins is adorable. This is an excellent way to go about living. Between you and me, that way of going through life is actually quite simple, unfortunately most people tend to complicate their lives. There are things we obviously have no control over but making the right choices when they are afforded us is the difference between a regretful and regret free life. Perhaps someday we'll all have clear vision and dare I say live righteously. If indeed there may be another chance for each of us I too hope I get it right the first time. ‹(°¿°)›

I'm with you about learning. I am currently working on obtaining my master's degree in humanities. Personally, I believe in being good, being loyal, being creative, and taking care of my children. In essence "modeling is the best way of molding". Hey, I think I just created a new statement.

Humanities is an excellent choice in my opinion. Any studies relating to our state of being or any other philosophical arts is a very noble undertaking. You can't go wrong with goodness, loyalty, creativity and the care of your children. It's sad how many people find those things too hard to be and do. Hmmm? "Modeling is the best way of molding." I do like that one.

I've made a very similar statement to your first one- "The only time I'm completely dissatisfied with my life is when I'm not learning anything." I also figure, you only live once (at least in this particular body/role/situation). So it's a better use of your time to follow your passions, even if you don't wind up the most "successful" person by society's standards.

Exactly. Society's standards are distorted beyond what most can grasp. Don't live life as others expect you to. That would then be a reflection of their's. You live your life with the passions that drive you and always keep the light of knowledge burning. If this is our one chance at existence then we need to make the most of it. There may well be as you said other plains of existence. Then perhaps this is just preparation for that which is to come. Another way I look at learning is this. "There are so many things and so many ways to learn it's no wonder why our lives feel extremely full or extremely empty."

Excellent views indeed. I think my philosophy is live life like there's no tomorrow, fully and with happiness. And the age old "do unto others.." one that we all know and were taught as children. I think if you treat your fellow human beings the way you want to be treated, you will be happy in life and make those around you happy as well.

Oh so true. With philosophies like that you won't look back later in life filled with regrets. Can't go wrong there. Living this way you're also starting the next generation out with a rock solid foundation. Enjoy life. Live it in earnest. Live it righteously. ‹(°¿°)›

I like your choices, JumpinJack. My favorite saying of late comes from Gandhi: "Be the change you want to see in the world." It's not enough to recognize that things need to improve in the world; it's not enough to give voice to them. We must live what we believe and want to have the world be like. If we want the world to be more beautiful, we must create the beauty. If we seek kindness, we must be kind. You can apply it to all sorts of things that you desire of the world. Most of all, it speaks to taking action in the direction of your dreams.

AnythingArt, good to hear from you again. Action is what it's all about, isn't it. People talk themselves blue in the face about the problems of the world. Yet if you ask them how they're making a difference they scowl at you. It should be as you described above. Each of us has something we can contribute to making humanity more humane. ‹(°¿°)›

I haven't summed it up into a philosophical saying that one day will be quoted by many, however I do have a philosophy I live by, Mine is to treat everyone as I would want to be; with respect, kindness, trust, compassion and understanding. I try to be fair and I will not say anything about anyone unless I am willing to say it to his or her face. Most people I meet like me and think I'm a sweet person, every once in a while there is someone who comes along and trys to take advantage of my kindness, borrowing money or something like that. I have learned the hard way to not loan out money. If I can 'give' it, I will, but not loan it!
• United States
28 Feb 07
There's no need for a quotable quote as it's called. A good philosophy of your life can take all day to explain, if need be. I'm sure at some point in time that's been done. I feel your last sentence does an excellent job describing you. "If I can "give" it, I will, but not loan it!" Whether it's as you stated, "respect, kindness, trust, compassion and understanding, (money)," My guess is you "give" not loan, unconditionally. No strings attached. ‹(°¿°)›
