Mourn for the dead?

I have a close friend of mine, who is in a state of shock and grief, even after seven years of passing away of his wife. They both were in great love with each other and never ever would want to live without each other.But one day, her love who had gone to pickup her children from a boarding school, to join her in the evening to celebrate her birthday, met with a tragic car accident and her husband died on the spot. In the evening, whne she was ready and awaiting at the door for her husband, was shocked see his deadbody. This left her mum and from that day on till today, she is yet in the state of stance. This makes me know from you, how long would anyone mourn the death of their loved ones? would it be for a month,year, decade or centuries or lifetime?
