Is wireless internet really wireless?

I want to know whether wireless Internet is really wireless? As I know that the world of communication is spread over different continents via under-the-sea cables. When we try to connect our notebooks to the internet the devices sends signal and expects return signal from nearest tower. And the towers are connected through wires. Please put your views.
