Some People Make Me Sick!

Guinea Pig Snacking - If this piggie could talk you just know he'd be saying, "Back away from that grass, it's all mine!"

Frozen Guinea Pig Found in Restaurant Freezer http://www.weirdnewstoday.com/2006/01/frozen-guinea-pig-found-in-restaurant.htm In DeKalb County, Georgia, a county health inspector found a frozen guinea pig tucked in a freezer at La Sabrosa restaurant, 2857 Buford Highway. According to the inspector's report, the chef said the guinea pig was for his personal consumption, but he could not remember where he bought it or produce a receipt. The restaurant scored an 87 on the December inspection, up from its previous 79. Janice Buchanon, the director of DeKalb's food protection program, said later that the restaurant owner had to throw out the guinea pig. I know that in some countries wild guinea pigs are caught and killed for food but we are talking about the United States here. That would be like someone having a dog, cat or other pet chucked in the freezer. So, if you live in Georgia, it's a safe bet that you'll want to avoid eating at La Sabrosa.

Oh dear that's not nice at all! I guess it's because we keep Guinea Pigs as pets that we think it's not nice to eat it (they don't have much meat on them anyway do they?) I'm pretty sure if we kept pigs or chickens as pets then we probably wouldn't want to eat these too? Definately keep away from that restaurant in future!

I suppose I'll be the voice of dissent! I don't really think it's that bad. As you mentioned, guinea pig is eaten in many other countries. In Peru, roasted guinea pig is a local specialty. It's a matter of social taboos, I suppose. I would be more upset if it were a dog - despite the fact that many people around the world consume dog (including pre-Columbian Americans). My question is, where did the guinea pig come from and how did it die?

That was what everyone wanted to know - if it was something that was raised for food like rabbits are sometimes or if it was something that was purchased as a pet then killed and tossed in the freezer. When we were in Mexico there were 'mystery meat' stores; you would see something on the grill or roasting on a spit and you would have no clue what it was. Too small to be a goat, too big to be a cat but just the right size for a dog. Needless to say, that put a damper on eating there LOL

Good lord...that restaurant is about 10 minutes from my house. Thankfully I've never eaten there. When I saw Dekalb County mentioned in your post I started muttering to myself..."Please don't let me have eaten there", over and over and over again.

oh yuck! Poor little piggie. Who the heck is gonna eat a piggie anyway? There would be nothing left after you skin it and gut it and all? How terrible.

Good post. That would be a restaurant I'd give a wide berth to. Here in Thailand, especially in the north west, many locals eat dog, something I could never do. However unless you're an expert you not really sure what you're eating. And as for health inspectors, I just consulted my dictionary, and as I thought, no such thing in THai!

Disgusting! Simply that! Personal consumption?! Who eats Guinee pigs? Especially frozen ones!
