Why is it that we get so "hooked" on soap operas?

Do you think our own lives are THAT boring? lol What is it that makes us want to watch all the cheating, the heartbreak, the secrets, the hot love affairs, the amnesia... Do you think we learn anything from them?

May be because it gives it taps the human psychology and deals with major unresolved human issues, Love , relationships, jealousy, anger. And every body will be able to identify to some character at some point of the story

Yes, I guess there are so many issues on the table that we can all relate to something on the show. I certainly see a lot of mothers naming their kids after soap stars!

Compared to All my children, yup my life is a bit boring.LOL. But all jokes aside, it is all the cheating, heartbreaks and amnesia that keeps me watching. Our lives are full of "reality"...raising kids,relationships,jobs,and finances. For one hour (sometimes 2) I get a break from my reality and enjoy watching the drama of someone elses. Even though soaps are fictional the one thing I've learned is " no matter what your troubles are, it could be worse"

You've hit the nail on the head. Maybe we are looking for some fantasy to escape to for that hour... The actors aren't that bad on the eyes either, lol.

I watch them because I am bored , I can`t do much of anything else so why not . But I mainly watch it cause I used to watch with mom every day after school . Now i need to watch it or my day isn`t the same . I don`t think I learn alot from them but I enjoy the story lines . How about you ???

I Learned One Thing. The Soap Operas on Family Dramas are Good. But the Same Soap Operas are Boring When it Has No End.

I might have a major meltdown if All My Children was taken off the air, lol. I used to have a radio that got TV stations and I'd take that to work.

I don't know why. All I can tell you is that I've been watching the show for over 20 years and I would be very upset if it got cancelled. No,we don't learn anything,but it's fun to guess what will happen to whom and laugh at the really stupid things.

My life is that boring! I joke that I l=get to live vicariously through the characters. The only thing I have learned from a soap opera was that I do not want that kind of drama in my own life.
