medical abbreviations

I am a nursing student and am curious to the orgins of medical abbreviations. For example, prescription is abbreviated Rx, treatment is abbreviated Tx, dignosis is abbreviated Dx. How did this "x" originate? I am very grateful that it did however, because it would be so time consuming if I always had to write out the entire words when doing my nursing homework. Please answer, I am very curious!

You are a nursing student you have the inside knowledge to this one. No clues at all ? The "X" is strange I always saw the abbreviation and use it myself to shorten things but I never questioned the "X" at all. Who do you think would know about this a Doctor ?
