Have you noticed that in most cases, no matter what one political party promotes in terms of policy etc the opposing party will immediately shoot it down?? How is this in our best interests?
You would think that politics as a whole would embrace what is best for the people but if you think about it, it is no more than a battle of wits and a struggle for supremacy. Even if an opposing party knows that a policy is of benefit, in most cases they will oppose vehemently for fear of alienating their followers. Is this true democratic process? No, it's a power struggle that has nothing to do with what is right for all of us. Agree?

No doubt the act gets downright dirty when it comes to politics in a democracy.Even when not in power ,the opposition leaves no stone unturned to make sure that a good bill looks disastrous, when it's effects are extrapolated.Again, for a populist bill they try to prove that it's actually their brainchild and the party in power is now fleshing it out to reap the rewards. In an ideal scenario, the opposition should not holler over a promising bill and vehemently oppose the ones that appears imprudent. It's perhaps one of the many vices of democract where any opinion ,even when meritless,is freely voiced. Can you imagine the case when the voices are stifled whenever they go against the governing body? I think that's more threatning and I prefer democracy even with it's drawbacks over that regime.

That's the problem. It appears that the "ideal scenario" is unimportant; which in turn affects us on the whole. Democratic process only assists in getting the people in power in the first place; from that point on the process is questionable. Thanks for responding.

I wouldn't mind so much if at least it was productive, objective, subjective, intelligent even. But it's usually personal mud throwing that has nothing what ever to do with tabled policy or what's in the best interests of the country being governed.
Children behave better, and really it has become very boring to watch.

Actually, I think the term you are looking for is "party politics". Political expediency is when you know that if you do not go along with something, your career will be very short or nonexistant. Currently, in the US it is politically expediant to be against the Iraq war and illegal immigration no matter which party you belong to.
"Party politics" is when you go along with the "party line" just because they are your party. You refuse to stand up and say they are wrong or vote against them. Depending on the feelings of a politician's constituents, playing "party politics" has cut short many a politicians career because it is not always politically expediant.
"Party politics" have been tearing the US apart because we only have 2 powerful parties. Most constituents do not fully support either party "line" completely but they fear the other party gaining power. No, it is not good for the average person.
