spaying cats to prevent them from multiplying and so are the responsibilities we have on them as pet owners, sound good to us, right? but what are its disadvantages they have on cats, if there is any? aside from the fact that i think this is somewhat costly for the owner. and how do vets do that? and for how long will it last?

The only disadvantage and I wouldn't even call it that, is the usually risks with surgery. Your cat will live a better life being spayed for all the reasons the other responders already said.
You can have the spaying done at any age as long as the cat is in good health.

It should be what are the advantages, It greatly reduces the risk in females getting ovarian cancer, ulcers etccc nad in males getting testicular cancer, renal cancer. And to prevent unwanted kittens I think its a small price to pay which will greatly lengthen their life.
