i have always found the interview board asking cliches like what is your name, where are you presently working, what is your salary...and stuff like this. i have always wondered, why do they have to ask when its all there in the resume. recently i have come to know, from my brother that a lot depends on 'what is your name' and obvious stuff like this. the warm up actually helps both the interviewee and the interviewer.

Perhaps interview board wishes to confirm that the candidate is the 'original' and 'genuine' person, so asking about his name, age and address etc. will confirm their doubts, if any. In interview, interview board can ask you all types of weird questions, to make you feel like a confused person, they wish to test your presence of mind and if you succeed in showing your presence of mind, they you are through.

You are right there, Deepak. The candidates are tested of their confidence level and aptitude in every possible way and matters as small as entering and sitting matter. Thanks.

That is for string the interview with an informal chit chat I think.Or the interviewer must be a strong believer in beaten conventions.

I have never gotten those kinds of questions at an interview, and beeing asked what my name is might have puzzled me more than relax me. I think it is possible to start with talking about the business you are interviewing for, or ask the aplicant to tell a bit about herself. That may be just as calming in my view.

Most of the interviews where I went were in my college days, because from college itself we were trying for a job. There, students were a bit more tensed, and questions like this really helped me sometimes to ease me down. Also now I have interviewed some people in my office. For teh interviewer also, such silly questiosn help to start off the things easily, as they will come to know teh attitude of the applicant.

YES , your brother is right -such small question get the discussion going rather smoothly & both intervier & candidate get breating time to get on to more serius questions. Acually Intervier is more interested to seeing how one responds to his question rather than actual answer, like confidance level, body language, how you are able to manage uncomfortable question
