Why are some people so careless of the environment?

A green and pleasant land - Taken last year, this is a view of what may well become another building development. I hope not.

I have just been speaking to our local environmental health department regarding a neighbour's rubbish. Long story short here folks but the heap of rubbish in the front garden is dreadful. Old prams, a broken fridge, a heap of broken furniture, ripped open rubbish bags full of rotting kitchen waste, old disposable nappies, it's all heaped in the front garden with no thought or consideration whatsoever. Apart from the fact that it is a dreadful eyesore, the health aspect is quite staggering as I have seen rats all over the place. Just before Christmas we had to get a sewage pumping firm out to clear the blocked sewage pipes after they had blocked the mains with dirty nappies, my garden was full of raw sewage, as was next doors garden too. It cost me over £300 to get cleared yet the inconsiderate £($&*^ who continue to pollute our street can get away with it. This seems to be an increasingly common problem these days though, with people dumping their rubbish anywhere they please and leaving it to rot and fester. Am I the only one getting fed up with this?

I must say i am very lucky not that have anything of that degree near me. For a council estate (although i am on the edge of it) isn't too bad. You dont see much litter drifting about on the streets. And its great that on my way down to the bus stop to work, theres a bin half way which is pefect timing to put my ciggerette dimp in so i dont litter! :D Ive only ever seen bags and such on the street on the day the bin men come, which for stray dogs is a dream, so sometimes they get ripped open and it goes everywhere, but nobody round here dumps rubbish like your neighbours do, not by half! I feel rather lucky now :)

I am hoping to start work on my front garden over the Easter weekend, and I have managed to find some reasonably cheap low fence panels which I hope will be enough to keep the worst of the rubbish out of my garden.

The town I live in has a law. You can not have a mess like that in there yard. If you do, you will be fined. It sounds like you need to get up a pitition to get a law started.

Having spoken with some of the neighbours, we have all contacted the local authority and hopefully they will be forced to clean it all up soon. With Spring well and truly on its way I want to get my garden looking good, so the sooner the mess is cleared the better.

In our area, you can be fined up to $200. for this type of stuff being outside even if it is on your property. You must take it or send it to the dump. They even put up cameras at illegal dump sites to catch people who were dumping there trash over the hill. We are trying to clean up our hometown.

The rubbish is still there, if anything it is getting worse. I guess cameras would be a good idea, at least it catches the culprits in your home town. Thanks for your comments

I think people who pollute or mess the neighbourhood must be severely fined. They should be made to clear their mess or face heavy fines or even loose their benefits.

Because they do not care about it. All they care about is themselves. They just want to be stupid. That they want to populate the air. To me I care about the world because I let my man take my car and I carpool. If it is a nice day out I take the bike or walk. Or I take the city bus. I planted flowers in my yard. Yes I would be doing the same thing recycledgoth because that is not right what they are doing to the environment. Because if it looks bad to their yard does that mean that it is making a bad name for your property.

I spent a few hours over the last weekend tidying up my front garden, the amount of wind blown litter was awful.

since time beginning man already been littering the face of the planet with all the material and possessions that man has considered as "property". It's very sad to think & know for a fact that we're only gonna suffer with all the consequence all because of the simple or should we say "complex" act of disposing the tiniest garbage/dump. there are always solution to every problem but when it comes to garbage, all ideas are just put to waste and ignored by everyone (even in the household). man is always assuming eternal supply, hope we'll solve this problem sooner.

Don't these peoplpe have any shame? If this is the state of their fron gardens I would hate to think of what the inside of their house is like. Have you contacted your local authority? Here in Ireland it is an offence to dump rubbish within view of a public road and these type of people would have to pay a hefty fine if caught. I see the same think happening a fast food drive ins. People just open their car windows and fling their empty cartons all over the car parks. I don't know how you can put up with it. I would be standing on the Council's doorstep and demanding that they take action against these filthy people. Have any of the other people in your neighbourhood complained?

I'm calling the Environmental Health Department in the morning, and having a word with some of the other neighbours about it all too. Unfortunately it's unlikely that much, if anything, will be done to enforce any order on these people as they don't give a damn. Hopefully, however, the local authority will get a crew down to clear the worst of it.

Well where I come from such behaviour is illegal and if you do not fix it when warned you will be in real trouble.

In our country, the condition is ever worse. I just heard that they are planing to cut 500 tress, to make a new road. They could have replanted them, but who cares!

It doesn't make sense does it. Let's rip the planet apart and leave the rubbish behind. Thanks for your response

I don't know why some people act that way. They are not even thinking of the long term result of their actions, they can even endangered some other people's lives.
