The first ever duplicate poker tournament was run in cherokee casino in Tulsa, OK. About 250 players started, playing in 27 tables of 9 players. Each one of the tables was give an identically shuffled pack of cards to deal out, so players at each table would have identical cards to others sitting in the same seat. Each player would get 10,000$ worth of chips to start every hand, and their wins and losses were recorded by a computer. After 18 hands, the wins and losses were summed up and compared to others playing the same cards. The higher scores advance to the next stage, and the lower scores are eliminated. After an 18 hand no-elimination first session, another 18 hand session cut the field to 144 players, then to 72, a quarter final stage of 36 players consisted of 6-player tables for the first time. A semi-final of 18 players was cut into the final 6 players, which played round robin heads-up matches (like a league) over three tables. A lot of notable poker players played in this event, including Scotty Nugyen, Jan fisher (2nd place overall), and Linda Johnson (Made the semi-finals), as well as many others. The tournament was run by e-pokerusa.com, and the same system will be available online in a few days. This system greatly reduces the amount of luck in poker and increases skill, so it's legal in the US. E-PokerUSA.com is a US company, and is NOT considered a gambling site.
