How many of you are caring for an aging parent now?

As the baby boomers age themselves, they find their own parents aging and becoming somewhat of a burden upon their own children. Personally I could never think of my parents as a burden, but many use that term. How many of you are in the situation where you are caring for an aging parent? Do they live with you? How do you handle it?

My mother in law is in a home but where she stays the management puts as much resposibility on the families as they take themselves. We have to buy things she needs which I know are normally provided by other nursing homes. It's not that we cannot handle it, it's just that I never realized until recently that this would be the case. I have worked in more than one home so I know for a fact these things are normally provided by the homes. For example, the government agency recently prescribed a personalized wheelchair for her. The next thing I knew, my husband was being told he needs to go pick it up and that it's not the responsibility of the home. I just don't agree with this. We have a compact car and the chair doesn't fold. After that, he was told to go out and buy her bed rails. The proprietor said the home would purchase them when she passes away, but not at full price since then they would be "used". From my previous experience with homes, this is not the way its supposed to be. I don't mind helping my husband to deal with the stress and responsibility of caring for her, but I wish he would find a place that would treat her and him both fairly.

That definitely sounds a bit odd. It's a tough situation all around, whether they are at home with you for care or in a facility.
