i have 700 dollars, i want to buy a digital slr/prosumer, which one the best nikon d40 or panasonic fz50. thnx 4 ur hel

I'd go for the Nikon. Personally, I'd save up more money and get the D80. Well, that's what I'm doing at least. :)

I used to own a canon digital rebel. I sold it in November and bought a Fuji Finepix s6000fd and totally love it ;-)

If I had $700 and those were my choices, hands down, I'd go with the Nikon. Every test I've read show that it lives up to the Nikon name. And, when you are ready to upgrade in a few years, every lens you have for the D40 will work on higher end Nikons. If/when you go to a higher end camera, you'll want to stick with a better known brand, Nikon or Canon.
