Do you like the idea of owning a gun to protect your family and house?

My lawyer friend just sold his gun saying it's useless to own a gun. He caught a thief in his living room last week and pointed the gun at him. The thief even dared him to fire the gun which my friend couldn't being aware of the consequences and hating the idea of killing a person. The thief finally left without getting anything but my friend was depressed by the fact that he nearly killed a man. How do you keep your house secured? Do you think owning a gun helps?
