ash wednesday???

hey people! i know this sounds pathetic but is it ash wednesday in the UK today? and also i want to ask a very shy question..hehe! what is ash wednesday all about? ive heard of the name but i don't exactly know what it's for? all the help is appreciated and please don't respond if your comments are going to offend me in anyway, for example calling me supid or something like this because i don't know what it is! thanks in advance! i will rate all users! :)

Ash Wednesday is not specific to any region, but more of a ceremony that basically kicks off the season of Lent for those that are Catholic or Christian. Lent is the 40 day period prior to Easter. Hope this helps you.
