I am really getting some fear seeing your avatar, however, in my opinion none should be attend to a function where other guests/relative/friend are invitated by a printed card, if no card then if the friend is best and relative are very closed then after little contact by mobile can be attended according situation otherwise not.

Yes I have done this before. I attended a Thanksgiving dinner for a co-workers family and I did not know anyone. I barely knew the co-worker. I had just moved to the town and was not doing anything for Thanksgiving, so the co-worker invited me and I went. It was odd , but I had fun and everyone was friendly and nice.

Never, I wouldn't go anywhere I wasn't invited, I would have the feeling of not being wanted.
