volunteer work

have you ever had any experience of volunteer work? if you have in what form and for what purpose, improve youself or only for the society?

I volunteered in a nursing home for 6 years after my mother passed away, I spent so much time in the nursing home with my mother that when she passed away I couldn't walk away from the other residents that I had gotten to care about, I learnt a lot with in those years.
