Do you recycle?

February 21, 2007 6:35am CST
I have heard that in some cases it takes more energy to recycle some products than it does to make new ones. In the light of this I try to buy recycled items and ones with as little packaging as possible (although it is made quite difficult for you sometimes). Which do you think is more important to recycle, or to buy recycled items?

I think both are equally important, and I try to do both as much as possible. I always recycle all paper products, and also glass, and bottles. I buy products from Waitrose, and Sainsburys, who both have "recycled" ranges in my local stores. I totally object to buying atuff wrapped in layers of cellophane, which is very damagingto the environment.

Its pre-packed fruit and veg that annoy me. Why can't we have bio-degradable paper bags to put our selection in, instead of either buying them packed or putting them in plastic bags.

I think it is important to try and do both as much as it is feasible. I know my family tries to be more conscious about recycling, buying recycled products, and buying more environmentally safe products such as cleaners.

I live in a country where recycling is a way of life. We recycle everything, from the different types of glass, which we separate according to their colour, to batteries, paper/cardboard, PET, etc. Even shops have facilities where you can deposit the unnecessary packaging before you leave with whatever item you've bought.

That is great, I wish we did more like that in this country. Some places are better than others, and most towns now have a recycling box as well as a dustbin, but somehow it still doesn't seem enough.

i congratulate your government then!! and your people for following this "recycle" attitude. Mother Earth badly needs recycling centers to minimize the overwhelming garbage that is piling up. spread the word to the world my friend!!

It isn't just the government, but mostly the mentality of the people. Recycling has become as natural as breathing. ;)

i think it would be better if we buy recycled items as it will take a lot of time, and yes energy, to recycle whatever we have. though, in small ways, we can recycle some of things we have too.

i think it is more important to be aware and buy those things which can be recycled. try to buy those products which u can send for recycling. at least that is the minimum u can do. more than that send the items for recycling.. trying to look for recycled products can be tiresome.

Yes I recycle everything I can , we have 3 different boxes and 2 wheelie bins and there are recycling stations everywhere , I believe in saving the environment as much as we can , my hubby washes out all the cans and bottles before he deposits them too , xx

Well I buy things that I need or want. I really never think to buy recycled items only or to recycle all things. And I think both 'to recycle' as well as 'to buy recycled items' have their importance so they can't be compared.

I tend not too worry if the item i buy is recycled. But we do recycle our rubbish. In out area we have genaral garbish collection once a fortnight. But recyclable stuff is collected weekly.

One thing that is hardly meantioned is the amount of food we need. (I'm not talking about the health aspect here)If people stop eating in huge quantities (junk)food just imagine how much the packaging waste will decrease. One bag of crisps each month instead of one each week. No tv-dinners.

You are correct in that for some items it takes more energy to recycle, however there are other issues to consider such as the fact that those items would otherwise go a landfill site. Recycled glass works very well and only uses around 25% of the energy needed to make new glass. You should approach it in this order - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. It sounds like you are already reducing by trying to by items with less packaging. I think it is equally important to recycle and buy recycled items. Good to hear you are doing your bit to help!

I very much believe in speaking through spending. We do our best to buy recycled products especially with high percentages of post-consumer waste. We recycle and home and we reuse whenever we can. We have a good size garden and a compost pile, grow lots of different herbs so a lot of bottles and jars get reused when we harvest the herbs. :) Both are important because they serve different functions. Recycling is important because you send less waste to the land fills and your "trash" can be reformed into a new product instead of taking up space in landfills . Buying recycled is also important because if no one buys the recycled products then corporations won't sell them. Bottom line, companies want to make money. If they see a market they will sell to it. If we show them that we want to buy recycled goods more will be produced.

On the Isle Of Wight they run a door to door collection service they take newspapers and magazines and glass and also food waste. I've been waiting for ages for my box to be delivered, I ordered one online but to no avail I'll have to phone up for one. I also use all my old cotton clothes in a large patchwork quilt I'm making. I think recycling is very important as well as buying recycled items, as the volume of waste we generate is huge if we don't recycle.

I do keep some of the products we've bought for recycling like paper bags, news papers, bottles, cans, boxes, and even old furnitures and home decors... And we also wanted to buy some stuffs which we think is not only for a single use. Recycling really helps you save money and the environment.

I think that both are important but I try to buy products with less packaging in the first place, so less need for recycling in the first place. Ireland is really only starting to get going in the recycling thing, also the Irish are really addicted to their SUV's, sickeningly!!

yes with some products it does take more energy to recycle them. A lot of products that I buy I use again as it is quite silly when you think of it if you just throw them out after once use. I think that it is best to buy goods that you can recycle.
