When you decorate you home, do you base it on a theme?

Since there are no discussions in this topic, I thought I would add one. Lets face it, at some point in most peoples lives there will come a time when they will need to decorate, usually to their own taste. What I would like to know is, when you decorate a room, do you or have you ever used a theme to inspire how it would look when completed? I do sometimes, when we decorated the livingroom, I wanted to give it a Japanese feel, as I love certain elements of Japan, so far it has a good base colour to work on but I haven't really exspanded. However I do at some stage intend to hand paint a Japanese Dragon on the larger wall, hopefully anytime this year.

I like your idea of the japanese dragon, sounds nice! I like big and bold colours, although like to decorate at least one room a year, I've literally just done the living room and it's looking very much like costas coffee at the moment, with two red walls and two creams walls with brown leather setter, I didn't do it intentionally, just noticed it the other day when I popped in for a coffee lol! Previously it was an orange wash with black furniture so it's a huge change but I like it!

At the present time I have a French theme in my kitchen, to a certain extent. It's not at all overly done. My table linens and dish towels have a French pattern. I have French posters and a French calendar on the wall....that's about it. I used to have a hallway in a prior apartment and I decorated a whole wall with a "teacher" theme. I had a bookshelf with all kinds of apple items that children had given me through the years. I even had a "teacher" wall hanging. I did get a bit tired of it all when I moved from that apartment and now all the *stuff* is in a box in the attic.

We decorated our living room and dining room in a lighthouse theme. We chose mauve and blue colors. Pictures of lighthouses and nautical things sitting around. It came out really well.

That sounds really pretty ! I wouldn't say I have much of a theme but am fussy on the colors in each room . In my kitchen I have a blue dish set all done in blue hearts so I like everything to be in blue or black . In my living room it is blue and black also . And each room has a color scheme I like to follow .
