AVGfree vs Avast

Do you have "experience" using one or both (free of course!)? If both, which would you say is better? If only one, tell me how satisfied you are with it. I have had a recommendation to use Avast, but quite frankly I am too lazy to try since I already have AVG installed...and I don't think I should have two antivirus programs installed. But I am curious as to how many people are happy with Avast vs AVG and vice versa and if there are some out there who use both. I love free antivirus solutions and I think since viruses are a problem computer users didn't create we shouldn't have to pay to get rid of them! I am also supposed to make a recommendation to someone and I am wondering if I should recommend Avast instead of AVGfree, but I had never heard of Avast til I came on mylot...so I don't know what to think of it.

I've used AVG for several years and love it! It does all the stuff that the paid antivirus programs do. It runs in the background and I never notice that it's working until it finds a virus or worm. It is one of the programs recommended by Kim Komando (www.komando.com) and I respect her opinion very much. I can't believe how many people think they've got protection because their computer came with a version of Norton's antivirus on it. What they don't know is that unless you contact Norton and start paying them, you are not getting the updates for all the new virus' out there. Since there are new virus' coming out every day, you're sure to get infected unless your antivirus program is up to date. I get updates from AVG every day--it's automatic.

You're right about people with pre-installed Norton antivirus. I think that's what happened with my sister's computer, which suffered because of the lack of updates. My own mistake was in not realising that the AVG on it was also in need of an upgrade. I will never be as careless as I was then.

i would suggest you to install AVGfree as its much more trusted and used worldwide. even avast is good. but depends on your requirement. because there are very very strigent antivirus out there like kaspersky which have to be trained after installation as to which all programs have to be opted out for communication and which processes not to allow access...

I didn't know that it was more trusted and used worldwide. Where would one get the information to prove that point? I would be very interested to know....because that would seal it for me. Kapersky sounds complicated and not user-friendly! Is it also free? Thanks for the response!

I don't think you're the only one...the problem for me is I never even got to the stage where I could download Avast, and the majority seemed to agree that AVG did the job well and was easy to use.

Maybe it was not in this discussion but in another discussion I started (which actually this is a spin-off of!) where a few people mentioned liking Avast. I don't think the people who have preferred it have been very detailed about why they like it better than AVG...I could be wrong...either way, I am not convinced yet!

Based on my experience, AVG is the best for me. I never had problems when it comes to viruses with my AVG as my protection. I recommend it to anyone because first it consumes a little space in your drive, effective to remove known viruses, and no annoying pop ups. I definitely say this is one of the best antivirus to have in your computer. So don't remove it their..

I've been using the free version of AVG for two years now and haven't had a problem. I like the fact that it's stable, doesn't take up too many resources(hardly any), and the fact that you can update it regularly. I don't think I'll be switching to another antivirus tool anytime soon.

AVAST is better than AVG when it comes to security and the scope it protects. But AVAST tends to slow down your computers specially if its ancient like what I'm using which is Windows 98 powered by Pentium II. I'm surprised that no one here before me mentioned about kaspersky. I think its far better that the two anti-virus on the topic. Maybe you would say its not free, right its not. But AOL.com produce an antivirus powered by kaspersky for free: the Active Virus Shield its 100% free and more effective than the previous too. Imagine having anti-virus with the standard of Kaspersky. Here's the link: http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?

Active Virus Shield is actually another program physically different form Kaspersky but so its no Kaspersky look alike but it uses Kaspersky engine and that's matter. Its kind a like making a user friendly interface to use Kaspersky's power engine. If you try to download it, its more user friendly and simple than AVAST or AVG. Take it from me, I only took less than 10 minutes to figured it out how it works.

Someone actually did mention Kaspersky (or maybe it was in another discussion I started...yikes!) but anyway, it was said that it was not "user-friendly" as I recall. I guess it's cool if you have AOL and are able to access something like that, although I think I would like more details than have been given so far about this software.

Thanks for telling me about the "slowing down" effect of Avast. That is what I consider to be very useful information!

I was using AVG for years now and I'm very happy with it, like you; I see no reason why I should change or even try anything else.. I believe that "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" :)

I think avast is better: it has more functions, when you have a virus it provides a removal tool, supercool automatic updates, P2p/IM protection .
