Life is essentially for fulfilment of our wishes ?

I have seen life both through my own eyes and others'. I had a notion that life is for others' wellbeing . With that belief in heart I even tried to do some works whose results would definitely lead to some happyness for some marginal people . My efforts lasted for long 7 years . For those years my own family seemed to be burden , because its very existence stood in the way to my so-called "humanitarian acts" .
But gradually I found that even the poor knows very well that money is the shortest correct answer to any pain , be it starvation or sickness , be it flood havoc or epidemic . And I also found that since i had little money to put in use for their betterment , my guidance were fruitless .
I was compelled to rethink and found that if I continued the losing battle at the cost of my family , i would lose in both end the family front as well as humanitarian front . So , now on life is for fulfillment of my family's need .
I think not only I , but the whole mylot community will like to know your opinion on it .
