Why is there so much junk e-mail?

Today I received an e-mail telling me that I have just won 1.3 million dollars in an e-mail drawing. I didn't even enter any drawing to earn such a fine reward. Why is it that we get so much junk e-mail?

Because I believe that there is so many spams and scams that are going arount all e-mails in the world.

I just don't understand how they get a hold of your e-mail address. This e-mail came from england. I live in the US. How did they get my e-mail address? It's weird how people can get a hold of that stuff.
