Should I be worried about my son's ears?

My son has got many ear infection since last year, they come and go. Yesterday we went to the doctor for a check on it, and she found again that it was not entirely over, saying something about ear pressure and water in between the ears... well ok, it is not the first time, and I have to go again for another check in 4 weeks. What is most likely going to happen is that he will again catch an ear infection before the next appointment and we will start all over again with penicilline and all. It has been like that since last year. What worries me the most is that she ask me if he could speak and if we had the feeling that he did not hear well, because it could be that he does not. Well, I think he hears me fine, when I call him and so on, but I am worried that it could get worse if he gets sick again! I am really not sure if there is a way I can prevent for him to get those infections again, I always put him a hat on and so when he goes out, but there is not much I can do when some kids in his day care are sick and he catches a cold from them (which is most of the time what results in the ear infection...) Any suggestions, experiences, advices are welcome, I am really getting worried about this.

My oldest was just the same. She started having them at 6 weeks and continued until she was 5 years old. I finally got a Ear Nose and Throat specialist to look at her at 5 when her kindergarden teacher said she thought she was having a problem hearing. They put tubes in then and she has been fine since. Please have your pediatrition refer you to a Ear Nose and Throat specialist so you can discuss the options with a specailist that deals with this type of illness all the time. You cannot prevent the infections, the ENT told me that the eustation tube that leads from their ear drum to their throat is just too narrow and their ears can't drain well, therefore the tubes help their ears drain and the fluid doesn't build up and cause the infection. You can go through years and years of this if you don't have the tubes put in, the eustation tube grows as they grow, but my daughter was 5 and still having them with no indication they were going to stop. I was just sick of her being in so much pain all the time, not to mention being concerned about her hearing.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I understand better now what is going on with him, and I will have a chat with my doctor about seeing a specialist like you mentionned.

My oldest was a lot like that, he would get an ear infection every time he got a cold, and he ended up getting quite a few colds his first year. With his last ear infection, it was close to spring, and the doctor told us, that if it didn't clear up, or if he had one in the springtime, he would need tubes put in his ears. We were scared, but he didn't have another one. (which was amazing, because he was having them back to back) I guess in springtime, it's more rare for a child to have ear infections. But infections like this CAN do damage, permanent damage to your son's hearing abilities, BUT if you haven't noticed it, it's possible it hasn't done anything. If you are worried, have his hearing checked. Also, whenever you are bathing him, put ear plugs into his ears, this will help keep the water out, He WILL HATE it, but it's better than getting water in there and causing another infection. Also, talk to your doctor about getting tubes in his ears, if he needs them? If you feel like your doctor has dropped the ball, there is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion. Some things that helped my little one sleep better during this time was elevating his crib mattress with a pillow, they like to sleep with their heads elevated, I think it takes some pressure off of their ears. Pamper him, a little, try not to start TOO many bad habits now, that you'll have to break later, you'll just be setting you and your son up for a very frustrating time. Good luck. I hope his ears start getting better soon.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and advice too. I will definitely ask my doctor about the tubes next time we go, which hopefully will not be before the next scheduled appointment. I realize now that there is a possibility this really affects his hearing and future maybe if he does not hear well then he will probably take more time to develop too. Thanks again for answering
