You have just received your monthly bank statement and while looking it over you realize the your account $500.00 more in it that what you have calculated. You recheck you figures and determine that there is a mistake that money is not yours. What do you do, call the bank and advise them of the error? Leave it where it is and wait to see if they notice or run out spend it right and hope no one misses it?

Although I am an honest person I would leave the money in my account until the bank realised its mistake, I'd like to feel that I have money for once!!!! The bank would eventually realise its error so there's no point spending the money as they'd take it back !! Mind you it would be nice to outdo a bank for once considering how much they make out of all of us haha

lol, I know the feeling about having money for once and I agree that it would be nice to put one over on the bank. Thank you for responding. :)

I believe that the course that most financiers and legal people would advise would be to move that amount into a savings account where it can earn interest and to wait for the bank to contact you about THEIR mistake. Banks charge us quite enough for looking after OUR money. If that happened I would be inclined to charge them for looking after THEIRS for a change. It would be wrong to regard it as yours and to spend it. Equally, why should I advise them of a mistake in my favour when they would quite likely wait for me to advise them of a mistake in their favour?

Something hasn't cleared yet, and when it does you would end up overdrawn and if you didn't take care of that overdraft quickly they would close your account. So I would recommend the wait and see approach rather that the go and spend it approach.

I sure wouldn't spend it because knowing my luck if the bank caught it later on, I wouldn't have that $500 to give back. LOL I would probably call the bank and just tell them that I am having a problem getting my figures to check out. I would have them go over all my deposits and withdrawals with me and go from there. I would hate for that $500 to belong to someone who really needs it and they are writing hot checks and all. ya know?

Very good point, if its not yours it has to belong somewhere and like you I would hate for them to suffer because of the banks error. Thank you for responding. :)

I'd always call the bank and find out where the money came from. If it's a mistake I'd rather rectify it, rather than hoping that nobody figures out the mistake and then take $500 from my account at a later date. What goes around comes around. I'd much rather not take that risk. Chances are the money would be taken from my account when I needed it most.

I would leave it in the way it is and wait for like at least a month. If still nothing happends, or I already made sure that it's really not my money. Then, I will call the bank and let them know about it. It's not just to give the money back, but it also helps me to protect myself coz I would never know if those money is really a mistake from the bank employee or some kind of the place to park stolen money for some bad people. I dont wanna get involve with something that I didnt do especially illegal stuff.

I would call the bank and inform them. It's not my money. If you spend it and they figure it out, you will be liable so I would let them know.

Same as most of you here that I will just leave those money in my account lol. I remember that a case is about a man took the money that the bank deposit into his account accidentally and spend it. Then the bank forced him to return those money. lol, I forgotten the result, not a good result anyway :(

I think I might wait and see if the bank realizes that it has made a mistake. Hey you never know you might be able to keep the money.

I had a smaller version of that happen to me. I ordered a costly item, then returned it. When I got my money back, the returned it twice and I did not have a clue where the extra money came from. It wasn't as much as you mentioned, so i figured it was a small mistake on my part, and spent it gladly thinking it WAS mine. After getting a bill from the stupid company that made this error in the first place, I realized what happened. Legally if you want to go to court and fight it and don't care about credit, you could kind of keep it. But trust me its not worth the hassle of even thinking about. I spent it on accident, simply call the bank and tell them there is more money in your acount than there should be and they need to find the source of it. After all, it could work out in your favor. If you ignore it, you might have to face seriouse issues in the future about it.

I have another "Hypothetical" Say you were walking in the mall during the Christmas shopping rush, and you decide to get some cash out of the atm. Its busy you are in a hurry you go up to the ATM and start hitting the buttons to withdraw money. After you have withdraw the money you end the ATM session and the card ejects, and you realize that you never put your card in. In fact you withdrew money from the person who was in line in front of you and left there card in the machine. Since they are long gone...do you keep the cash and leave the card? Take Both? Or just the cash and walk until you find the person? Haha as you can tell this happened to me...it was quite a moral dilemma

If it were my bank I would just leave it in there for a few months. If it did not go away and they keep saying it is mine then who am I to argue with them. If i had made a mistake like that you know they would be ponding down my door for the money. So I guess hopefully I would be $500 richer in the next fw months if they didn't do anything about it. Or if it was a checking account, withdraw the money and put it in a savings account. that way if they do ask for it back then I have it to give plus I would kepp the interest it made.

I would let it stay in the bank account and do nothing about it until the bank catches it and then takes it back. I would hope that whatever interested I collectd on it from sitting there would not have to be repaid after all it was the banks mistake I should not have to pay anything back.

I would call the bank right away. because sooner or later they would catch the mistake and make you pay it all back. So its best to assume its not yours and give it back. Who knows they might even reward you for your honesty.
