I have lost 9 kilos in five weeks

In five weeks I have shed more than nine kilos in weight and I haven't had to buy anything to help me achieve it. In fact, I have saved over $500 in gym fees and fuel in the process!. After the discovery of sugar diabetes the doctor told me I had to lose weight so I decided it was high time for action, but after checking out a couple of gyms ($490 for six months' membership) and a budget already stretched to the max. I thought then I have got to try to get rid of this sugar diabetes as the doctor told me that I could have a chance of getting rid of it if I lost weight. Walking is one of the best all around exercises there is and it is free. Every morning I grab the headphones and go for an early morning walk for about 40 minutes. All of us girls seem to be watching our weight so it is pretty easy to round up a walking partner. I have also started to incorporate more incidental exercise - kicking a ball around the yard with the kids (encouraging healthy lifestyle early), walking to shops to grab the milk and bread (also saving with these horrendous fuel prices). I also plan to get into the garden and do some weeding and plant some seeds that I saved from last years annuals and vegetable patch; great exercise and beautifying the garden for spring and summer on the cheap. I only had 1.5kg hand weights at home, so rather than buy smaller weights I just used cans from the pantry for the first few weeks in increasing weight increments until I worked up to the 1.5kg weights (only this week). You could also check eBay or garage sales for exercise equipment. I have also taped Aerobics Oz Style onto blank video tapes, and do these at night when the hubby and kids are asleep. A couple of girls at work have offered to lend their exercise/yoga DVD's as well, so that we can swap/rotate and stave off boredom from the same old routine. People have already started to notice my weight loss and improved skin tone. I am a reformed couch potato. I love my morning walk; it clears my head and leaves me with a natural high (endorphins). I still have around 15 kgs to go to reach my goal weight but am already nearly half way there. Anyone can do this! I now have a tighter butt and a neater, prettier garden. Forget the expensive gym memberships, the diet pills, the anti-depressants, the mowing and gardening service. If I can do it anyone can it, one step at a time. So next week I go for my sugar diabetes test and I will send you the results.

Congratulations!!! That was a great achievement. I really will start brisk walking tomorrow but sometimes some important meetings and researches constraint me to do that. You are one good example here that even without gym you can really lost weight with great determination and motivation. (hugs!!) I can really tell that you are very health concious by the discussion you made and by the tips you discuss that's why it is not impossible for you to lost weight. I was really buying a excercise machine on march on my first pay on myLot sort of a gift to myself lol!!! I will pray that you have good result on your diabetes test. keep us posted. Great work!!

Congratulations to you for such a wonderful weight loss, not to mention feeling and looking much better already Kathy, and I do hope that you are extremely proud that your efforts are paying off for you. The fact that you have support from family and friends as well as workmates is also great, and will be a great incentive for you too. It is surprising how much money you can save from doing it yourself without having to go to a gym, and you are living proof that it can be done. So many people think they have to join a gym to actually lose weight and/or tone up. Did you ever see the story on the woman here in Australia who lost a massive amount of weight, just by walking? In her case she was apparently obese, and was ashamed to go out in public so she started walking around the clothes line. Once she started to lose a little bit of weight, she did what you are, i.e. carrying a couple of cans from the pantry. I read her story and it was truly inspirational and how fantastic she looked, because there were photos of her before, through the time she was losing the weight and then at the end. I do hope that this works for you, and quite honestly I would be surprised if you were that bit further away from sugar diabetes than you were before you started on this new regime. A friend of mine is never on a diet, but about 20 years ago she went on a lifestyle program (her words) and has followed that since then. It means she walks, does some exercise in those days with the children but now with the grandchildren, eats good food and if she had a bit of "junk" every now and then, it isn't a major disaster. Once again congratulations Kathy and keep us updated on how you are going with everything. :)

Hi actually I started having 3 meals a day but it was due to the exercise walking and the change in the milk and not using sugar, although I do take a sugar tablet but not direct sugar on anything, and I only have this tablet twice a day it is hermetes and it is not bitter.

Hi Tanika, yes I am very happy that I have lost weight and losing a bit more since this time as the doctor said that I could possibly get rid of my sugar diabeties if I lose some weight so that is why I have tried so hard.

Thank you for this inspiring post. I think alot of us who are trying to lose weight have tried many options but have not succeeded, and are probably feeling frustrated and unhappy. Now you have proven that with a higher level of daily activity you can actually achieve good weight loss results. I suppose you also have to watch your diet too or did you not make any changes to that? Well, first thing to do I guess is to start walking more! Good luck to the remaining weight you want to lose.

Congratulations!!! You are not only losing weight you are doing it in a way which will allow you to keep it off!!! Some people starve off the pounds only to find them back with extra when they resume eating their normal ways...with the kind of exercise you are doing and the lifestyle change you are creating, you will be able to maintain your weight loss...which is the hardest part...a diet will never work long term ...it requires a lifestyle change to take it off and keep it off....Good for you...a standing ovation....( can you hear the crowd roar?)..lol

That is brilliant and well done to you for making such a big life change. I hope your diabetes test come back ok. I have heard that if you walk 10,000 steps a day then this is the minimum for optimum health and weight loss. I think you deserve a pat on the back and I am sure you have now increased your life expectancy by many years, much healthier years at that.

wow good job. that's really amazing, and you did it through really easy things such as just taking a walk! did you also change your diet at all? ive been trying to lose weight for the past few months and, although ive lost a bit, i feel that ive had to work so hard for it. i have a couple of workout DVDs, but after doing them every single day for weeks, they just got boring and repetitive. i have, however, changed my diet quite a bit, but i find that im falling back into bad habits slowly. i think i will take your approach and take a long walk every day! im not a morning person, so i dont know if ill be able to take a walk in the morning, but i guess the afternoon or evening will have similar effects. thanks for sharing with us!!

Congratulations. You just inspire me.Admire your determination.I was used to be a girl weighting not more than 45kg.But after went to college,i neglected exercise and did not watch what i ate.So now with my weight more than 70kg and the high level of cholestrol, i am more likely to develop hypertension or heart disease if i do not start to watch myself right now.I tried many times to exercise but then i end up sleeping for the whole day.Your way of doing this inspire me.Wish me luck and thanx for inspiring other people.
