Fighting in surgery? What next...

Can you believe that I was just reading a news story about a surgery in a Belgrade hospital where two surgeons started fighting in the middle of an operation?! Apparently, one surgeon was operating when his colleague walked in and made some remark that started a quarrel. At one point, this colleague pulled the ear of the doctor who was in the middle of surgery, slapped him in the face and walked out! Thankfully, the fight continued outside the room, and an attending surgeon was able to complete the surgery successfully. But what if that attending surgeon had not been able to, or what if the fight had escalated right there in the surgery room, causing harm to the patient? I find this so sad, don't you?

Surgeons - Doctors who perform surgery on people who needs it..
MsWolf, wow...I tell you somethings people do leave you really at a total shock...Especially in surgery...Yes, it's very sad and I wish whomever started the fight gets fired. Those the type of people I don't want operating on me or anyone else like that...

Wow, it IS sad, not to mention extremely irresponsible! When you go for surgery you place your trust in the surgeons that they are going to repair whatever problem you have, and in some cases save your life - and instead what do you hear? Stories of surgeons getting into fights. Were these surgeons fired from the hospital? I would hope so. I find it extremely dangerous of them to continue to work together if they can't agree on things and resort to fighting halfway through surgery on a patient. I dread to think what would have happened if the other surgeon hadn't been there.

That is absolutely horrible and horrifying that two surgeons would get into a fight with each other during a surgery. They both should be fired and not allowed to be doctors for doing such a stupid and dangerous thing. They are putting their patient's life at risk by doing this. That is very unprofessional for them to do that and I certainly would not want either one of them doing surgery on me or any of my family or friends.

i saw this, and i think it is a terrible testament to both the state of health care and of human nature. It is apauling that such a noble profession should have fallen to such a low ebb blessed be

I don't suppose that they mentioned what the fight was about did they? Definite sanctions are due to those sugeons. Harm would be something that would made this situation even worse and then prison time would probably be necessary. So sad when this misbehavior happens and then ends up in the news. That hospital now has damage control to do.

Terrible and makes me hang my head in shame as a doctor. A doctor should always have the patient as his topmost priority and all differences between colleagues need to be settled out of sight and alone! This incident is absolutely unprofessional and mustve put the patient at a lot of risk. Even if it ended up well, its very dangerous

That would be terrible. I would sue the pants off of the hospital. The one that went in to start the fight should be fired on the spot!!!!

For some reason this isn't surprising to me. I've actually wondered how often it happens in normal circumstances where you have 2 doctors/surgeons working together. A lot of doctors are very temperamental and set in their ways. I think their egos can often get the best of them. It's very sad indeed though.

My husband works at a printing press where an argument like this could cost your job! And that's because it slows down production and lowers morale. How much more important is that surgeons keep their cool! I know this has been said a thousand times, but really what is this world coming to? Plus, you think they would be so scared of a malpractice suit that they wouldn't dream of doing something like this. Yes, this is sad indeed!

Well you would think that two surgeons would have more common sense than that and if I was that patient I would be sueing their butts off. How childish! I can't believe that two grown men that have been through years and years of medical school and going to pull one anothers ears and slap, what are they school girls? lol Thanks for sharing...it's outragous and funny! Kinda....ha

That's really sad. Doctor's profession is pronounced as novel profession. This act of both the doctors, that too while operating truely don't support the dignity of profession. They even not realized their duty as a human, their activity could have demaned someone's life.

yes, that is terrible, and downright embarrassing. They are lucky the patient was not hurt- they could have been sued.

All sorts of things go on in the operating rooms of the world. The tv doctor shows dont show a lot of what really goes on. I used to work in hospitals, I 've heard a lot of stories of the OR. Some docs play annoying music. Some talk on the phone. Some play pranks. Let's face it some doctors are big egoists. When you get two or more big headed doctors in an operating room sooner or later someone will get into an argument or fight.

This is too much. Doctors should not behave in that way. They have to be aware of their duties and the place where they are. It is ridiculous to talk about it. Only people who are required in the operation room should be allowed and for others restriction should be prohibited. So that these kind of careless things do not happen again.

Yes, it is incredibly sad that the two surgeons could not act more professionally and had to resort to schoolgirl-type fighting. Thank God there was another surgeon to complete the surgery. What is sad is that the patient paid the one surgeon to do the procedure yet he didn't...someone else had to finish the surgery. Suppose the patient had chosen that particular surgeon because they had a great reputation for success w/ that proceudre and that the one who had to finish isn't known for being as good with the procedure. That is a sad situation for the patient. There is a very sick part of me (it is part of being a nurse, I can't help it...we learn to diffuse tense situations w/ humor...it is a coping mechanism) that also can giggle at the visual image I get of the two surgeons fighting. I can see them with their little masks on,looking much like bandits. Their scalpels pulled and poised like swords....I'm sorry. I won't continue because it really ISN'T a funny situation. It was pathetic.

Its really sad to hear. thank god there was another surgeon who took care of the operation. other wise think of the situation the patient would be in. I am really scared after hearing this, i dont know what would have happend without the other surgeons help.

I have been a surgical technologist for 14 years now and one thing I learned about surgeons, most of them are spoiled brats. They throw hissy fits at the drop of a hat. Some have belittled the staff in their room and I have seen more than a few throw an instrument across the room. This episode is disgusting and childish. Even with the attending surgeon, the one that left the field to continue a fight can be charged with patient abandonment, since he was the head surgeon on the case and the patient put their care in his/her hands. I am truly appalled! The surgeon that came to the room can also be reprimanded sense he was not involved with this case and needed the patient's consent to enter the room unless it was for a consultation. Not good, not good at all!
