for fantasy, try George RR Martin's series, "A Song of Ice and Fire." The first book is "Game of Thrones." Political intrigue, love, war, all the good stuff.

I read a little bit of everything, but my favorite books are historical romance. Bertrice Small is one of the best writers in this category. She excells at creating intricate plots and twists and combining them with real historical data. Her time eras vary, but most are set during medieval times. I can tell you a few other authors also, if you are interested.

For some really great mysteries I would try the enitre Alphabet Mysteries by Sue Grafton. The main character is a female private eye and she is so average that it makes her very likable. I think Grafton has written all the way through S, so you should have a lot to keep you busy. The first one is A is for Alibi and all the others are titles like that.
ANother great mystery series is the Joe Gunther Mysteries by Archer Mayor. Gunther is your average aging blue collar cop and the mysteries are so well thought out. Mayor is terrific at descriptive and you really get to feel like you are driving around Brattleboro Vermont when you are reading the stories.
For fantasy or sci fi I would try the Eden Series by Harry Harrison. They are very creative and create an entirely new world with great characters. They are really strange and new and interesting. They are written really well and just seem tog et you sucked into this new world. They are West Of Eden, Winter In Eden and Return To Eden.

Have you read the Johanna Lindsey books from that era? or Judith McNaught.
Johanna Lindsey has a series about the Mallory family, Starting with Love Only Once, there are now about 7 or 8 in the series.
Judith McNaught: Once and Always, Something Wonderful
Catherine Coulter : The Courtship, Mad Jack, The Offer
