I am always looking for better ways to be prepared for any type of emergency that could happen in our area. I know that it is impossible to be prepeared for everything but we can be better prepared in many ways. It does not matter where you live, there are natural disasters that are common in your area. Each area is unique but the natural disasters that happen are not. It is a wise idea to have a safe room somewhere in your home. This room needs to be free from windows and should be in the center of the home. It can be used in case of tornado or high winds and other natural disasters. Do you have a safe room in case of emergency? I found this wonderful article that has some really interesing information on safe havens and safe rooms. I think you may be able to find some info to help you be better prepared and to help you understamd why being prepared is so very important. This article is called Safe Havens and Safe Rooms and it is by Carolyn Nicolaysen. It can be found here http://www.ldsmag.com/emergency/070221safe.html I own a group on gather that deals with the subject of being prepared in all situations. The group Be Prepared has alot more information that will help you to be better prepared in those emergency situations. Check it out and see if you have knowledge to add or if the knowlede already shared will help you. If you would like an invitation to join, just email me with your personal email address and I will get that invitation right out to you. Another Great site with information on safe rooms is from the government but all countrys can access this information. It can be found here http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/saferoom/

The safest room probably in my house is my downstairs closet which goes in and under the stairs. There is no window and no debris can hit me. There are no windows are anything near this closet either. The only other room that i could consider safe would be the downstairs bathroom though it is small. Thank you for including that link for everyone to view.

No but I have a storm shelter which I detest. We had straight line winds and 12 tornadoes several years ago that destroyed our town. So of course FEMA offered to get us a storm shelter or safe room. We really wanted the safe room, but there was no one in our area that built them. We had to get the shelter, but it is of no use. It is not the one we wanted and the steps are way to steep for my elderly Mother and it is full of spiders and baby snakes. I hate it! My son and I have been in it twice but I doubt I will ever go back in it again. For now we will staay in the halls like usual and hope for the best. When my Mother passes we will sell the house and I am sure the value will be higher because we have the shelter.

If there is a natural disaster where I live it will most likely be a tornado. If that's the case we will go into the basement. I hope we never have a tornado, for obvious reasons, but also because I would hate the be in our basement too long. We have an unfinished cement basement and it's not very pleasant! Also with three toddlers it would not be very much fun to try to entertain them. At least tornados don't last long!

When my son was younger, I always told him that if there was a tornado, that he should go down to the boiler room and wedge himself between the chimney and the wall and stay there until the noise was all gone for at least 10 minutes. He was also to take the dog with him and close the door. That is about the safest place I could think of.
