I hope that you have heard of couchsurfing.com. Some of you may even be members of that community. Couch surfing is an internet community in a global basis for friendship and cultural exchange. The main feature of the community is that members of the community gets free accomodation at couchsurfers place in a foriegn country while they are in tour. Many western couchsurfers are enjoying this facility in developing and under developed countries. As we all know it is people from the US and Europe travel the most. A very small number of people alone travel from the poor countries. So the benefit of couchsurfing scheme is enjoyed mostly by American and Europian travellers. I am an Indian. We here are doing a lot of things for promotong tourism in this country. We welcome foriegn tourists wholeheartedly. We expect business from them. The money they spent in this country keep the economy of the country animated. The main business in the tourism field is in the hospitality sector. But the emergence of couchsurfing type of communities topple the scope of hotels and guest houses. If we ask they may say that we are also offered with the same benefits when we travel. But as I stated earlier, seldom do people from India travel to western countries on visiting tours. I think this is a planned conspiracy from the part of the travelling community of western countries to exploit the poorer countries. Therefore couch surfing should be banned in India, for the best tourism interests of the country. What is your opinion?

Sure couchsurfing provide chances to get into people's lives and help cultural exchange. But it is not fair to stay at somebody's place and leave without paying a penny. Tourism is a business. In a business nothing should be provided free. They should allow the host to collect reasonable accomodation chargrs from the guests.

I have to laugh.. why?
You say: "But it is not fair to stay at somebody's place and leave without paying a penny"
This sounds like everyone has to have a couch for someone who's traveling through the country/city/...
But 1. not the whole world is a member of couchsurfing.com nor all people who are members there offer a couch.
And the most important fact is - people who are willing to let someone couchsurf do know that they won't get money and they know if they travel around they will not have to pay money. So where is the problem?
YOU DON'T HAVE TO LET PEOPLE SLEEP AT YOUR PLACE.
I don't really understand your problem.. noone orders or obligates you to do it.

It is an internet community. Its members while travel seek accomodation in fellow members homes without paying anything. Please visit www.couchsurfing.com and you can see the scheme for yourself. There are chances for you to get attracted to the site and register with them.

Couchsurfing is not the against the interests of tourism, it is the friend of tourism. You are thinking of only the negative side: the loss of income from hotels, but not of the positive side, which is that it is bringing tourists who wouldn't otherwise come because they couldn't afford to pay for a hotel stay. And these tourists will still spend money, just not on hotels. Therefore it is good for tourism to have couchsurfing.
You should also consider that couchsurfers are a tight-knit community, it's not the huge movement that will steal big dollars from hotel tourism. I think it would be a good thing in some instances because staying at a couchsurfer instead of in a cold impersonal hotel will actually be a plus for most people. Couchsurfers have people who vouch for them and leave references. So as long as you are wise in your choice of a host, you can't get those kind of assurances from a hotel. It could actually be safer in some places.
