My puppy and the kennel

My dog in the mountains - It was a nice sunny day with snow and he had so much fun playing with it!

My dog is now five months old. We are to go for a trip in a few weeks, and since we are not allowed to bring dogs we have to put him in a kennel for a week. It seems very nice ewhere he is going and the people working there also seem trustworhy. But stupid me is worried. How will he handle a week without us, how will he be when he comes home? Will the other dogs teach him bad manners, will he not be socialized enough, will he have lots ogf fun and will he sleep and eat well? I am worried. And yes it is our first time putting our dog in a kennel. Has anybody else some experiences to share?

relax, your dog will be fine.like you said you trust the kennel..they will take good care of him.they only let the dogs run loose long enough to excersize a little,so your dog wont pick up any bad habits from other dogs.so enjoy yourself.you can give the kennel your phone number were youwill be staying if you want. an they will call you if something bad happens.im glad to see that you love your dog an are worry about him.thats a true dog lover!

I trust kennels wither especially since I used to work at one. They promised the owners things like 3 walks a day yet would not schedule enough employees to handle the task. I would stay late sometimes (unpaid) just because I felt sorry for these dogs. The kennel was often loud and many dogs seemed very nervous about all the commotion. I hire a pet sitter that comes to my house for my pets. I think they are more comfortable in their own surroundings.

Your dog will be fine. My dogs have so much fun at the kennel running and barking with the other dogs, I doubt the even realize I am gone. They are god and tired when I get home, so I know they are getting proper exercise. Your dog will be fine, believe me, he won't spend all week crying because he misses you, even though you want to think that. He'll be so distracted by new sights, sounds, smells and friends that he'll be just fine. If you don't like the idea of a kennel, you can also consider using a pet sitter. They come to your house, so your dog can stay in familiar surroundings. We have 4 dogs and we do this because it is less expensive for us in the long run, and it keeps our house protected while we are away.

Each dog is different. Most have a great time at a good kennel. Our lab is the exception. He always experiences separation anxiety so now we hire a neighbor to babysit him in our home. He does much better at home. But I think dogs who don't have anxiety issues are fine at a kennel.

I second the idea of using a pet sitter. He can stay home and not be subjected to any doggie illnesses! If you do decide to do the kennel thing, make sure he's utd on shots and kennel cough. And check out the kennel ahead of time.
