What's the best pet to have and why? I don't have one right now, work several days a week, and just wondered if I should even have one at this time or not.

If you are hardly ever around, it might be better to wait to get any animal(except perhaps fish) until you have more time to devote to it. That said, I really recommend rats to pretty much everyone. They are reasonably low maintenance and reasonably easy to care for. They are also intelligent and greatly enjoy human interaction(unlike some other small animals). They're very clean animals with virtually no odor. Their biggest drawback is susceptability to respiratory illness, so they need to be kept, at minimum, in a climate controlled environment with good air circulation(no fish tanks! Wire cages only). They are extremely social animals so you need to have at least a pair or you're likely to end up with behavioral problems and the like(and yes, they *can* become depressed when kept alone). They are also nocturnal, for the most part, so they will be active in the overnight hours-- keep them somewhere other than your bedroom if you can't sleep while they're bopping around. Also be aware that it is fairly common for humans to be allergic to rodents in general, and it can range from a bit of itching to really unfun stuff like allergy-induced asthma(that's what happened to me, I keep it under control with medication, works just fine).

Kimberly, I'm sure most people don't think about rats at first when considering a pet...thanks for the info.

Yes! I was going to recommend rats as well (I have 13 boys, myself). You beat me to it, and did it well. I am involved in many rat communities online and rescue offline, and so much misinformation is out there. Props for this comment.

I've always been a cat person. They appreciate being rubbed, but don't slobber all over you. They bathe themselves. And there is nothing like the sound of a contented cat purring! LOL

My puppies! LOL I think you should still have a puppy - they are there for you no matter what and when you come home, they are sooo full of love and don't want to have you out of their sight and they follow you all over..

I'm a foster mom to animals. I love cats the most though. I currently have 2 cats of my own, 3 foster cats, and a foster dog. I love animals of all kinds. Even bugs. I don't kill them. I just gather them up and put them outside in a safe place.

You're pretty special to foster so many animals. Cats have always been my favorite also, but hubby loves dogs best.

I guess I'll wait until we're retired now since it will be later on this year...and I'll definitely wait until we've moved and gotten resettled.
