What is mental health care like where you live? Is it adequate?

I live in the U.S. and know that there needs to be improvements made for mental health care and treatment options. But in the state where I live the funding has been cut drastically. Two inpatient psychiatric treatment centers in towns close to where I live have been closed within the past two years, outpatient treatment centers are so underfunded that many have had to close so this puts a tremendous strain on the state hospital which is now terribly overcrowded. Sorry, but maybe I'm just venting here;sometimes it really bothers me how funding for the treatment of mental illness is typically overlooked or seen as not very important. Is this an issue with anyone else?

Mental health should be an important thing to any society. I have not personally seen it and I think depression is over done when many could just improve their diets and resting patterns. Closing those facilities when they are clearly needed should not happen. I will be interested also what others have to say about their health care in their areas.

I understand what you mean in that some forms of depression can be alleviated by improving one's overall health care. However with major depression a person almost always has to take medication;the same goes for other conditions such as bipolar disorder. But I know what you mean about the importance of taking care of one's overall health because the mind, body and spirit are all tied together.

It's sad that mental health care isn't better funded in a lot of places. Thanks for replying. :)

When I lived in Florida, there was a very large community mental health center that was a pretty nice place. You could get your medication, therapy, case management, and day treatment all in one place. The problem was that Medicaid in Florida changed and went to HMOs. One HMO would pay for the center, one wouldn't... this HMO would pay for XYZ medication but the other HMO wouldn't. It's been a mess. Other non-profit mental health centers have opened up there, and they show promise in picking up the overflow of the major center. It's sad how mental health is getting less and less funding. I recently moved to Illinois, and I haven't been able to identify a community mental health facility in my county. I'm not completely familiar with how things are run here, but it's distressing to say the least.

I hope you're able to find a mental health facility in your county soon, maybe the family or social services office can tell you where the closest one is. Thanks for replying. :)
