Why do some men still think that the way a woman dresses encourages rape?

Do they really think that just because a woman or girl wears a short skirt and skimpy top that she is asking to be molested?

sadly enough this is todays truth. Even here in sweden - a developed country people (a few thinks like this) I even heard about a guy raping someone and got his sentence dreduced coz she wore a "sexy" outfit.. So what??? We should be able to walk naked across the street if we want and still be able to decide who can touch us and not. I get really angry by this and it upsets me that some people actually can sit and say after a girl got raped... :- Well she did wear a short skirt, why would she do that ???

yes. they don't ask what as guy was wearing when he got beat up by a mob. They don't say Oh, he must have dressed provocatively

Certainly, as women, there are some "unwise" choices we can make that could potentially increase our risk of being raped- dressing provocatively, walking in the dark alone, going to a party or bar alone, being drunk without someone to look after you, etc. But the point is, we shouldn't HAVE to worry about these choices. A man could walk around naked, alone, and drunk at any party, and nobody would even think to take advantage of him. But if a woman does the same thing, she was "asking" to be raped. It's a gross inequality. As stated by the first respondent...I ought to be able to walk around naked without having someone touch me without my permission. What I wear does not affect what rights I have as a human being.

Rape is about power. Rape does not occur due to the way a woman dresses. No woman deserves to be raped. Men rape because they feel power over the woman. Men who rape should spend their life in jail.

In fairness to the few good men... not all belive in that. But my hubby is one mamong those who believe so... that's why we get to have some arguments sometimes. I always tell him that we women dress the way we want because we wanted to please ourselves and not anybody else.

Well, first off, you are brave & honest for admitting that your hubby fells like that. I respect you for that. Obviously though your hubby isn't one of these guys that thinks a woman is nothing more then property. I mean, you said that yall argue over it so apperantly he respects your opinion. If you dont mind me suggesting this, next time the convo comes up use the analogy above. Think of something that he charishes, (like if he is into bikes or loves his car) Ask if he thinks it would be his fault if he had his price object out & some folks seen it & took it just cause they wanted it. Would it be his fault for haveing it out were they could see it & be tempted or theres for braking the law & not useing self controll? Again, dont want to offend you. But if you do ask him, I'd love to hear his response.

no i don't think it's that only..i think sometimes the behaviour that goes with it..but even so that is NO EXCUSE OR LICENSE TO RAPE..RAPE IS AN ABOMINABLE CRIME AND NO EXCUSE CAN BE MADE FOR IT...men should learn self control..but i think girls too should be a little sensible don't you think?

No, girls shouldn't have to dress any more sensibly than men. Nobody says anything if a man runsaround in just his workout clothes (shorts and sneakers), but women get accused of flaunting themselves if they do(shorts, sports bra and t-shirt)

I don't think that all Men think this way, only the molester's and rapist. My husband see's these girls and women dressed this way and he thinks that they should put clothes on it is a very disrespectful thing to leave nothing to the imagination. People should see your inner self before they see your outer self.

I can honestly say that women these days do dress less... meaning not many clothes at all. than they use to back in the day. Women do dress to show their bodies off and men do look. But however, i do feel that it shouldn't matter how a women dresses. A men should be respectful enough to not rape a woman. It's wrong, even if women don't cover up all the way or not.

its the typical male mentality..always the girl would be blamed..men would never agree that they did some mistake and they seek the easy way out...though we live in a democratic country still the galz have to think twice thrice before wearing anything..if she wears something revealing she'll be said to be asking for unwanted attention....common people...doesn;t a gal have the right to wear what to wants....when a guy wears revealing clthes derz not even a word said..its pathetic to see men making such lame excuses for their petty actions!!

No need to say as every one knows that. The same exitement is aroused but just at a low lavel. So obviously they are asking to be molested.

You sir are completely wrong, How would itbe if we women decided to beat you every time you don't wear long sleeves, and cover your head? You are saying thesame thing about women. What a stupid idea. And what a stupid man you are. i pity your sisters and wife.
