My cat eats paper

My cat is driving me crazy. She is 15 months old, a rescued cat by us about 7 months ago. She is the sweetest thing. But, this one habit is driving me nuts. She eats all paper. Checks, money, envelopes, shoe boxes, books, anything. She grabs the paper the moment I take it off food, or clothing, or anything, and hides it. She is obsessed with paper, and as she is getting older, this is getting worse. What can I do? Spraying with water and saying no, only stops it for the moment. Can she get sick? Do you have this problem?

As long as the paper isn't contaminated with anything, it shouldn't hurt her too much. She might poop weird, but that's about it. If you think your cat is bad, check this out: my cat eats insulation. You know, the fluffy stuff that looks like cotton candy but is full of fiberglass? She eats it and then throws up, eats it and throws up, and she never quits. I can't do anything about it, because my dad won't put up walls to cover the insulation...

Thanks a lot for attacking me, people. It's not like I enjoy the fact that my cat is being harmed. But I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, as stated in my post. I don't have the money or the skills to put up drywall all by myself. My sister and I both tried numerous ways of covering the walls (hanging sheets over them, etc), and it never works. Believe me, if I could do something about it, I would- because my sister and I are also having health problems from the insulation dust that's floating around. I actually moved into an apartment on my college campus because of it, but it's against policy to keep my cat here. So please don't treat me like I'm some cruel animal hater.

Honey, I don't think anyone is attacking you. We just are worried about your cat, it can be dangerous. Perhaps you can lock it in another room, and keep it out of the room without dry walls. Or use a squirt bottle with water, and spray it everytime it goes near it. Relax dear, we are not upset with you.

Cats are like children in a lot of ways. I have found that I have had to kitty proof my house. My cat is a jewelry thief! If I take off a neckalace I have to put it up where she can't get it. If I don't do this I will never see it again, she hides them. She also steals my husband's extra shoelaces. I don't think the paper will hurt your cat unless like said before it is contaminated. Anything important though should be put in drawers or containers that kitty can't get into. Good luck!

So you have a theif too? Only the one that chews papers, steals my personal things too. She hords and hides them. Hehehhe. Maybe cats are just like this. And, yes, they are like babies. I run around looking for dangerous things she can get into. Thanks for your reply.

Our female cats does this too. We were told by the vet that it is normal and to only worry if she is actually swallowing large amounts of paper since this can make her not be able to poop. She has chewed up wrapping paper, mail, newspaper, kleenex, cardboard, foam, aluminum foil, cotton balls, and the list goes on. If there is anything important that you want to keep, you have to make sure she can't get it in our house.

I'm sorry but you made me laugh. I have mental picture of your cat with a piece of paper in her mouth and looking for a new place to hide it. I have never heard of a cat doing that now my 9 month old puppy loves Kleenex and toilet paper and I am pretty sure he has eaten some of it before I find it and it does not seem to do him any harm.

One of my cats, a male, has a thing for glossy paper and cardboard. He will chew on magazines and even pictures. He chewed on a payment book for a bank loan. It is kind of funny, because all the payment coupons have teeth holes in them. But I still send them in to the bank. I don't know what the solution is. My other cat doesn't chew paper. I think sometimes if they don't get enough food, they might resort to eating other things.

Both my cats eat a lot. The food is out all day and night, it's dry. But, only one is eating cardboard and paper. The other one likes glossy paper. Maybe it is a cat thing. I just don't want them sick.

Rain doesn't eat paper (yet), but she does love to shred cardboard and chew it up. She doesn't swallow it though. A friend went to one of those bag it yourself grocery stores and brought a box of groceries over one night when he was making dinner for my husband and I. Rain immediately decided the box was hers and began picking up her toys, with her teeth, and placing them in the box. We decided she could keep it as a toybox since she worked so hard for it, but every morning we would get up to these hunks of cardboard all over the living room. Finally, I caught her actually doing it. She finds an edge to the box and takes a big bite, ripping out the cardboard with her teeth. Then, she spits it out and bats it around the room like one of her toys. When I asked her vet about it, Dr. Talley said it wouldn't hurt her...so to make a short answer long, I don't think paper will hurt your baby...but it is strange :)

Thank you moonshadow. My one cat tears the cardboard box up too. I don't know if she eats it, as much as tearing it to sheds.

Well, I don't really know what to say. In the first place, this is the first cat I have heard of that eats paper. We don't own any cats. Maybe you should keep her someplace where she will not be able to come in contact with paper for some time. When she stays for up to a week without paper, she might let go of the habit. What do you think?

Margie-- I forgot to add this earlier, but it is importnat....just don't let her near photos! My husband is a photographer and one of his professors with cats said to be very careful with photos around kitties. Apparently, they really like the emulsion that is used to fix pictures (of course, more modern photos printed on computer paper might be different). Anyway, cats will like the chemicals off the photo paper and ruin the photos and make themselves very sick in the process. So--regular paper =okay. Chemically treated paper=sick kitty.

My friend's cat keeps scratch the furniture or anything with her claws. We just don't know how to stop her behaviour. This is quite similar to you cat's obsession with paper. I just want to the secret trick to stop them from doing such things.

For scratching, the cat must have a scratching post or cardboard scratcher. A few. Also, spray the cat with water and say no, each time she goes near the furniture. That will help alot.

We had trouble with our cat climbing the curtains. I read somewhere that cats don't like the smell of oranges so I got a can of Pure Citrus Orange Air Freshener and sprayed the bottom of the curtains. She backed off like she had been shot. Tried the same thing on our bedroom door which she loved using for a scratching post. Same reaction. The only problem is that the fragrance only lasts a few hours, but we have continued to respray every few days. Now we don't need it any more because she never knows when she is going to encounter that horrible smell. At least it smells horrible to her. I kind of like it. I don't see why it wouldn't work on paper. Good luck.

Your cat sounds like one I had that was once a stray and ate plastic. I always thought he ate it beause he was a stray and was used to tearing open bags to get the the stuff he could have. It could be this was a habit started by your kitten as a stray. She might have used the paper for food when she couldn't get anything else, or used it for bedding. But I wonder if animals, like humans, can suffer from Pica. A condition where people eat non-nutritious items like paper, sand, dirt, glass, metal pieces, etc. Might want to ask a vet.

There is nothing to worry. Cat is the obly breed which can eat anything from cucumber to onion or from maize to wheat. Only it depends on cat.All the cats cannot have same eating or drinking habbits. I can tell you this because me and my family are cat lovers. Without cat we dont feel at home. Since my childhood I have been having cats with me and I have seen their habbits. You wont believe but I had a male cat, milky white but it never drank milk rather it preferred tomato sauce. Also I had enjoyed with a cat which eat socks also ( socks and no clothes). Hence there is nothing to worry about your cat eating paper. It can be considered natural for cats. If you have any cat photoes then please send it to me.

I used to have a cat that sucked on sweaters... it's usually some mineral or vitamin that they lack that instinct helps them find in odd objects, sometimes it's iron. You can have the vet do some blood tests and find out what's missing in their diet.

Eating paper can indeed give her problems. See this site!! http://www.fabcats.org/behaviour_eating_inedible.html it might help you. Good luck with this since we wish for the kitty to indeed have the better life that she deserves. My cats say to love her and play more!! LOL

I don't think that this is abnormal or that she can get sick from it. Cats are so different in their behaviors. I had one cat who ate kleenex and toilet tissue; I had to close the bathroom door when I left or went to sleep because she would unroll the toilet paper and shred and eat it every time! My present cat has never touched these things in all of his 11 years. I would ask the vet. next time she goes for a checkup if this is harmful, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. You know how you can go out and spend a fortune on cute toys for the cat and they'll ignore them all and play with a pop bottle cap for days! She's just being a cat. Keep your important papers hidden from her, though!

The only thing I can suggest is try to keep all paper picked up around the house. It probably won't hurt her so long as it's just plain paper but it's probably pretty annoying for you. My parents have a cat that's obsessed with plastic bags, if you leave any of them laying around she'll immediately start eatting it and carry it away. So we just have to be very careful to not leave any grocery bags or anything laying around for more than a second.

yes she can get sick and even die as someday this paper will block her wind pipe so better show her to a vet or may be shez having some kind of teeth irritation or prob okay here an idea just mix coffee in a bowl and pour it in ur water spray bottle and every timew u catch her chweing paper spray this inside her mouth and whn u have done this atleast 5 times then just spray this on few papers around or on the stuff from where she grabs paper i guess the taste and the smell will keep her away from chewin paper.

My cat eats paper a lot. It's gotten better as she has gotten older, but I think it's just because she's becoming too lazy to go find any paper. She still eats it when it's near here, though. One time, when I was younger, she ate my homework- and my teacher didn't believe me. The only thing I've found is that if you make a loud noise whenever the cat gets near the paper, it startles them and they forget, sort of, about the paper. But I have yet to find a way to cure it.
