Did you throw a big party? Where did you have it at? Was there a theme? What kinds of activities did you do?

It sounds like it was an enjoyable day, even if it wasn't anything big or grand. Big or grand is not always better. It would be great if the weather was nice for our daughter's first birthday, I'd love to do something outside. Maybe have a bar-b-que or something.

We decided to have a small birthday celebration at Macdonalds with a few family and friends (They only had MacD's in Samoa - no other places for childrens birthday parties). They provided everything including the cake and the few kids that were there loved it. We didn't have a theme nor did we do any activities. We saved the big party for when he turned 5. That was back in New Zealand at Chipmunks with 20-30 children and 10-15 adults. We had games like pass the parcel and other ones for the kids, they could play as much as they wanted in the playground area and us adults got to sit down and relax and catch up on what was happening in each others lives. It was a fun day and my son loved all his pressies :)

Both my brother and I had our birthday parties are Macdonald's when we were young! It sounds like the party you threw was a lot of fun. The older your child gets the more I think it makes sense to do something big. When they're really little they can't remember it anyway.

no, It was plain and simple... no gifts no nothing.. It was more of a "Mom and Dad" moment than the babie's.

Nothing wrong with that! I think first birthday's are always going to be more of a mom and dad moment than anything. Babies don't grasp the concept of growing older or celebrating their births. They don't have a clue as to what an amazing milestone it is in their lives! But for us parents it means so much!

We had 15-20 people, but they were all family. A couple of the young kids, but not a specific kids party. DS likes Pooh & Tigger, so we had balloons & I made special cakes. But he opened his presents, we ate and the adults talked while the little ones played a little. It was lots of fun for DS. Didn't overwhelm him too much.

That sounds like what I picture our daughter's birthday to be like. All family, mostly adults, a few balloons, some cake and presents. The adults can sit around, eat, and talk while the kids run around and play. Thanks for sharing.

i didn't have a big party for my daughter for her first birthday. i wanted to do some special family time. her father and i took her to park safari, where we get to drive around the animal park and feed the animals. they also have a water park and fair rides. so it was a huge day filled with fun things to do. by the time we got home it was just about her bed time. so we had some cake opened her present and then got ready for bed. this has become a tradition now. she loves going to the animal park. she's 3 now and we've been going there for her birthday every year.

My son's first birthday was a rubber duckies theme. he was stuck on ducks at the time. It wasn't a big party we just ahd family over to celebrate with us. We had it at our house so that he could nap if he needed and indeed he did fall asleep during his party even though he had napped a little before. We really didn't do any special activities b/c it was mostly older people there. It was more of a gathering than a party. At the time we didn't know anyone else with children to invite. His second birthday was MUCH more fun. It was The Wiggles as well as his third birthday was. His fourth will be in August and I've been informed he would like The Wiggles again. Thank goodness I kept the decorations. Hopefully for my daughter's first in Nov. it will be a bigger party.

BTW my son wouldn't touch his cake on his 1st b-day he was going thru a stage where he wouldn't get his hands dirty. He didn't even eat any of his own cake.

Rubber duckies...that's cute! We don't know anyone else with children either, except for our relatives, and their children are all older. I don't think activities are needed for a first birthday party since she's too young to really participate anyway. Just food, cake, and family is all you really need.

Since a 1 year old really doesn't know what is going on we kept the first birthday small. Just close family in our home. No games or themes, just family celebrating the first year of life.

I think that's what we're going to do. Have family over to celebrate but wait until she's older to throw an actual party. Thanks for sharing your experience.
