Okay this happened to me yesterday... what would you do about this one?I went to my local post office out here, to mail out a pile of stuff like I usually do when I go to the PO. Anyways long story short, my total came up to 76 dollars and some change canadian.
Well, the girl at the counter runs it through the first time - through the interact machine and it didn't go through . Their machine has issues sometimes.
Second time she ran it through and it completed, okay fine.
So we get into the car, and I noticed my til reciept said my total was 76 dollars and some change, yet the interact reciept said I was only charged 16.48 . I thought it was a typo, so I called my bank to make sure.
Sure enough, the teller had only charged me 16 dollars for a 76 dollar item.
What would you do? I mean I go to this post office all of the time. They see me in there frequently. I know when they went through their til reciepts last night they would've noticed that one item was 60 dollars short.
Someone I know said the next time I go into that post office, they will tell me that I owe them 60 bucks. Which is fine I have absolutely no problem paying the 60 dollars which I rightfully owe.
On the other hand, other people have said that because there is*no* way they can connect me to the missing 60 dollars, they won't be able to come after me for their error.
What would you do? Would you go into the post office the next time and tell them that you realised the till reciept was quite a bit more than the actual interact reciept and offer to pay the difference? Or would you just write it off as employee error?Thoughts?

They would most likely write this off as an employee error. It is up to you how to handle it. I've had this happen before in another situation. I went to go back to pay it, and they said that it was their mistake, and not to worry about it (I still go to that post office all the time) Things happpen, and people make mistakes. Even the fact that this is concerning you shows that you are a good person at heart. I would go back there and tell them what happened. Worse that happens is you have to pay the money back. It's not like you stole the money, it was their error. Hopefully they will claim it was their mistake, and you will not have to pay it back. Either way, I would bring it to their attention even though there is not way they can track it down to you.

Yeah, because when she put it through the second time, me I didn't even look at the bank machine thingy I just punched in my key pad because my daughter was freaking out and I needed to run. I didn't even notice the error until I was in the car.

Being a sort of run government institution, I think they would be a little more strict and insist you pay the difference. If it was just a few dollars I wouldn't worry about it. But $60??? (What the heck were you mailing anyway? LOL!) Being as broke as I am, I would think it a lucky break for me. I couldn't begin to tell you how to handle it.
I found a package of ground beef priced at .95c. I pointed it out to the cashier telling her it must have been an error. She shrugged and said it was the meat department's problem, not hers. So I got, like $4 off my package of meat. I sure didn't feel guilty about that!

I would go back on my own and tell them about the error. Especailly since its a place that you frequent often. I'd have a hard time with my conscious if I didn't. Also, it will put you in good light with the managers. If something were to ever come up in the future - you'd be a person that they would consider as honest.

I would say don't worry about it at this point. I'm sure it happens all the time. I't not your fault and they would not try to find you I don't think. If and when the mistake is caught I'm sure they deal with it internally. Just my opinion I don't know about how it works in Canada.
On the lighter side.....
Next time you go to the post office...keep and eye out for the "Men in Black" ...hehhee

LOL!
Yeah . Im sure it happens all the time too, considering their Interact machine was old and they have had several problems with it.
