I like the musical but couldn't read the book. I tried but it was a bit too fantastic to me. Andrew Lloyd Webber's music made me forget about the plot. I can't be objective enough to compare two characters but if I didn't finish the book and watched the musical movie twice, I have to vote for musical Phantom.

That's a tough one. I'd vote for the musical Phantom because of the passion he shows, passion that if I remember correctly the one in the book doesn't have.
However as a character the one in the book is better explained, as the author tell us all about his physical ugliness, his past that made of him the strange creature we see him as, his many talents (he was a genius in many ways) and his feelings for the other characters especially Christine. We see a man not necessarily evil to begin with but toughened by bad experiences and lack of love. Come to think about it I might vote for Erik too :P

They both have their ups and downs. Book Phantom is a lot scarier due to the details in every section of the book. The musical doesn't have the chance to flesh out the story as well, and on top of that there are two characters missing (the Persian and Raoul's brother Phillippe, the latter getting murdered late in the story).

I LOVE both. I think they complement each other he he he...but personally, the book is definitely more complete, more detailed. It's left such a deep mark on me.
I once saw the TV version of The Phantom of the Opera (1990 version, Charles Dance as The Phantom). I fell in love with that one, then I bought the book. I never saw the real opera show (only the latest version of The Phantom of the Opera movie). I still think the 1990 version is better than the latest movie, though the book is still highly recommended by me. ;-D
