Pets Behavior at the Vets

We had our pitbull/lab mix at the vets this past week for his yearly shots and he was quite nervous. He seemed OK (just curious) until we got him up on that slippery table, at which time he turned into a nervous wreck! He was shaking a little bit and even peed a little bit. What have your experiences been with your pets at the vet? Were they nervous? Did they try to nip or play with the vet? Share your experiences!

oooohh...I feel so sorry for your doggie. I can't imagine how this little heart was shaking. Both of my dogs are very nervous at vet clinic. My older dog is crying at vet clinic and in grooming place. What I don't like is the fact that some vets are trying to make you guilty of it. Animals do have emotions and they are afraid. I always request limited waiting time and I want to be with my pets.

I'm sorry, but if my vet were to give me a hard time about anything my dog does in his office, I'd find another vet! I love the two doctors at the office we use. They're super friendly, really understanding, and amazingly good with the animals. In fact, this morning he was laughing because the person before us had a cat that peed all over the office and all over his leg! Vets should know that animals are animals and when they're stressed, sometimes there's not much you can do about their behavior. As long as the animal isn't acting aggressively or hurting anyone, it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm with Bun on that, I'd switch vets. There are too many kind ones out there who would actually respect the animals that I'd want to support.

Funny -- I just had both of my dogs in for their annual check-ups this morning! Masha, my Siberian Husky is a trip. In the waiting room all she wants to do is play with everyone who comes through the door. It's a struggle to keep her contained! Then they call us to go back and see the vet. She's fine until we get to the door of the little examining room. Then she plants all four feet and refuses to move! My hubby wound up having to pick her up and carry her in. Once she was in the room and the door was closed, she was fine again. She went back to licking everything in sight and wagging her tail. Vali, my German Shepherd, is another story. He's a rescue, and we're sure he was pretty severely mistreated as a pup because he's a complete fraidy cat when it comes to anything out of the routine. He shakes and shivers the whole car ride down there. Then we get to the waiting room and he alternates between being curious about the other dogs and hiding behind Mommy's legs. Interestingly though, he was fine once we got into the examining room. Even let the doctor draw some blood to run a test! I was quite impressed with how brave he was. We're still working with him to get him to be less fearful, so this may be a really good sign that it's all paying off.

It's neat how every dog can have such a different little personality.

I just took my dog, a chow shepard mix, to the vet last week too and she freaked when I put her up there. Her back legs were just trembling so bad....I felt horrible. We got bad news while there too, she has heart worms :-( I've had her for 7 years now...she's the best dog in the world!!! I hope I don't lose her. She goes back in a month to start her treatment...pray for her please!!! Thank you!

My little ones are pretty good but when I had my large, scary looking dobernman pinscher and I had to take to the vet she was was so nervous she used to leave large wet sweaty paw prints on the floor.

Sometimes it's surprising to see the bigger guys more frighhtened than the small ones.

My dog definitely hates the vet. As soon as he sees where we're going, he'd start to shake even when he is in the car! Once we get inside, he just continues shaking and gets very nervous and starts pacing up and down. He doesn't stop shaking until we leave the place.

My golden retriver doesn't like the table, but she does well at the vet. She lets them do whatever they want. My healer/terrier mix doesn't do well at all. She doesn't like to be put on the table. The last time she started to get an attitude and I suggested that they muzzle her.
