I have a 7 year old cat who, for a while now, has stopped burying her waste when she is done using the litter box and for some reason, she is smellier than most cats. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this horrible habit?

My cat has never buried his, he is now 10 years old. Back when he was a kitten, I asked the vet about it and he said that some cats just don't. He further said that it might be because my cat was pulled from his mother at too young of an age. (I got him at the local animal shelter). Anyway, he never has buried it and it is reallllllyyyy stinky!

Ugh, one of my cats is like this too. My older cat used to cover it for her, but she got tired of doing it, so it smells quite often.

Not really, only thing I can think of is to just clean it immediately. That doesn't help though when you're not home and the smell goes throughout the house though lol. Did you recently switch to a different litter? If so, maybe she doesn't like it. Or, try switching to a different litter. Good luck, my mom has a cat with really smelly poop as well. You know, her cat ended up having worms, have you been to the vet recently for a checkup?

Wow, never would have suspected that it could be from worms. Thanks for the tip. She hasn't been to the vet in years.

I have two cats that use the same box. My older cat has stopped burying sometimes too. You can smell it right away so I just quick get a plastic bag and sift it out. I feel terribly lucky that he goes IN the box, so I'm not complaining much, lol.

lol Sorry to have laughed at your apparent 'annoyance' but it just reminded me of what my older cat did to my daugher's younger cat this am. He took a HUGE dump in the litterbox and didn't bury it like he normally does. About an hour later, I hear a distressed meowing coming from the litterbox. I go into the kitchen to find my daugher's cat sitting right outside of it in total distress cause she had to go and Lightning made it impossible for her to even enter the box let alone go potty. lol That's when I discovered what he did. When I took the cover off to sift his poop out, she immediately jumped in and went pee. I swear she was sighing in relief and thanked me with kisses to my hand. Just to be on the safe side, I will agree to the other posts to take your cat to the vet and have it checked out. If she gets a clean bill of health from the vet then it could just be she's being a lil stinker and 'marking' the box to let the other cats know she's been there.

one of mine started doing that-i think as a dominance thing with her brother(they always squabbled over "me first" in the box).i went and got a littermaid so she couldn't do that. but if she was burying it before and it smells worse now, i'd definetly have her checked out. could also be she doesn't like the litter,as others have said.
