Have you tried this? It is a great way of using up those plastic shopping bags, save the landfills, and get a useful item to boot. The effect is very cushy. You can make throw rugs for the bathroom, tote bags to take shopping or to the library, a pad for your pet's basket - I am sure the ideas are endless. My husband jokes that I could make him a sweater emphasis on SWEAT. hehe. Hey, free crocheting material is always a good thing, no?

It sounds like a lot of fun. I have bags full of bags. Do you have a picture to share with us? I would like to see the finished product. And maybe a website where we could see detailed directions. Thanks. Tell your husband, Happy Sweating.

Greetings! It really is kind of fun, and my girls love to help. The youngest one likes to unfold the rings, and the eldest likes to link them together for me. Take your sack and lay it flat on the floor, cut the very bottom off. Now accordion fold the bag from side to side. Cut across the folds for whatever width you want your "yarn" to be, 1.5 inches or thereabouts seems to be a good width. Now you have several rings, open them up and join them together via a larkshead type knot, this will make a continuous double "strand" fabric to crochet with. When you reach the end of your rings, just join new bags to your work in the same way.

as far as patterns you can adapt your regular crochet patterns just substituting the bags for the yarn. There is an example of a really nice tote bag and instructions at Marlo's Crochet corner. I am not seeing an option to post links or images for this reply box. hopefully I transcribe this correctly! www.marloscrochetcorner.com/Plastic%20tote.html :) enjoy your Sunday.

What a good idea! The grocery store that I go to charges for their bags or you can take your stored ones to re-use. But, of course, I always forget to take some and have to get more. I have bags upon bags so I'm definitely going to try crocheting something. And thank you for the link, I'll be going there to check it out.
