my best spanish mackeral was 28kg, as i do nearly all of my fishing on the barrier reef, i get to catch some good fish, my best coral trout was 16kg, but i lost one 3 times one day that went 18kg, my mate caught it, and it still had my hooks in it, over the years i have caught some big fish and lots of them, i once caught a leopard ray that was estimated at 250kg, it was too big to lift out of the water, but i let rays go anyway, i got a 50kg greasy cod a couple of years ago, when i was pulling it over the side of my tinnie, i had my feet against the gunnell while i was pulling it in, and the boat started filling up with water, so i pulled harder, and it came in quick, i fell over with this cod flaping on top of me, i catch all of my fish on a 80lb handline, i love fishing the reef

In the early Eighties, I had embarked on a two year salt water fishing break on the East coast of America, starting in Boston, and working my way down to the Florida Keys. Whilst I was in New England I broke my intention to salt water fish, and went fly fishing for lake trout in Lake Champlain, where using 55lb fly line which changed colour every 5 fathoms, I managed to land several fish in the 50-58lb range, I then continued my original plan and salt water fished both beach and deep sea, till I ended up in the Keys, where slightly bemused with the electric deep sea reels, decided to try my hand at fly fishing for shark. After a lot of ribbing and mirth quayside, my charter captain made for a known area about 3 miles out where we then proceeded to try and attract 'jaws' to sample my lure which consisted of half a blood-red feather boa which hours earlier graced the neck of a young lady I found, at a shoreside club. It took a bit more ribbing to allow the lure but 20 minutes later it was hit and I had a shark online.....using the 55lb fly line I had used earlier on my trip, a 285lb steel trace with a Daiwa/pro-Penn rig. 6hrs later a 284lb Bull Shark! the most wonderful experience I've had deep sea fishing!!!

thats a good catch for fly gear, i have never used fly gear, but it is getting popular over here for salt water, i have used what we call a w0g, it's a hook with fire tail tied to it, i suppose you could call it a sort of fly, we make them with tail twice the length of the hook, and add 2 bits that fold back once in the water to form fins, then we troll them at up to 10kts, depends on what species we are after for the speed and colour, i get sick of sharks out the reef, there are so many of them, you lose a lot of fish to them, i don't get excited when i see one diving anymore either, all the other divers don't understand, with the exception of a big tiger or one i have never seen before, if you ever get to australia, go out to the reef or the creeks and try your luck.
