Apperance is important, but not by itself. The only reason why looks are valued is because people think there is "value" behind looks. They believe that good looking individuals have good qualities and that the outside is an indicator for what is in the inside. If this is true, then an outside shell without the goodness inside is merely a chocolate wrapper without the sweets. The most important thing is not having the looks but rather having the good qualities that everyone really is attracted to:
1. intelligence
2. kindness
3. good humour
4. personality
5. generousity

The qualities you mentioned are indeed important. However, it is also the unfortunate truth that first impressions count, as least until you get a chance to impress the other party further with your qualities.
But don't be too worried. Be a good person and one day, your good qualities will shine out and they will be more obvious than looks.
