Why I like to help the homeless?

I may get a beat down from this discussion, but my heart goes out to the homeless and poor because Jesus felt the same way. He said in Matthew 25 "as much as you do for the least of my people, you do for me." If you read that whole chapter, you will see that homeless and poor people were very important to him. What kills me is some (but not all) mega Christian churches has vast amounts of money and technology (TV ministries, huge church buildings, colleges, bookstores, etc.), but no room for the homeless and poor. I recently attended a church that has over 10,000 members, about 5 built-in screen TVs, a college campus, a bookstore, and all kinds of ministries. But there was no homeless ministry. I looked and looked and even asked the ministers was there a homeless ministry, and they said no. It is like the Christian churches overlook one of the most important aspects of Jesus ministry (That we love one another and help those who are in need). If everyone helped each other, there will be no homeless people today. Homeless and poor people should not only be the responsibility of the government, but the church as well.

You are so right. I was posting in a discussion the other day that was similar to this in some ways. It seems as if the churches are getting richer and richer and are doing less and less for those who are in need. I have never read the entire bible, but I do know that God expects us to help the homeless and the poor; this is a basic part of humanity. I have also attended churches with the multiple wide-screen TV's, professional sound systems, and modern buildings. That is part of why I'm having trouble finding a church where I feel as if I "fit in". I think that the money would be better spend building a shelter and ministry for people who are homeless or living in poverty. Some other ideas: Open up more food pantries and meal programs. Open up a clothing donation center and give clothing to the poor. How about assistance for people who are ill with chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or HIV/AIDS to get medications if they are ineligible for social services? I would rather see these things happen before my church built a new building with state-of-the-art video and TV equipment.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I was in training for two months. Great suggestions! I will look into these. Thanks.

Actually it is no one's responsibility to take care of the homeless, but I do believe that more needs to be done to help these people get off the streets. In my area there is a program in place that shelters and helps homeless people find a job so they can get back on their feet again. We do need to show more compassion towards these people, since most became homeless because they had lost hope. I believe if more hope was restored back into those who have lost hope, there will be less of a problem.
