Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home? In my state it is the law for landlords to install them in apartments. I visit homes in the course of my daily work and many landlords have not installed them. They are very important, just like smoke detectors. Do you check your detectors to make sure they are working properly?

Yes I had one installed in my apartment and they are good to have just like a smoke alarm. I know many people who don't get enough heat so they put the stove and oven on to keep warm, so having a carbon monoxide detector is important.

Nice to hear so many people have carbon monoxide detectors along with smoke detectors. I am curious, being that you live in an apartment, did your landlord install the detector or did you purchase one on your own? It is sad that so many people depend on ovens for heat, I hear of that often too. I also put my oven on when the radiators just don't seem to be enough to keep the house warm. Thanks for your response.

No, it's the law and the landlord had it installed. I am aware of some landlords that break this law and I hope they are all eventually caught and fined.

Yes, I have several. I have the dual smoke/carbon Monoxide detectors. They give off different signals for whichever is being alerted and it talks to me. I look at them frequently to make sure they are in working order. My dog hates it when I test them. I think it really hurts her ears to hear the high pitch tone from them.

Hi there, thanks for responding. Yes, the detectors are wonderful to have. I did not know the dual detectors give off different signals, that is good to know. I know what you mean about your dog, my cats can't stand the sounds either. It probably does hurt their ears. Take care...

We have two carbon detectors one on each level. We keep them up to date and make sure they have fresh batteries every month. We only do that because we rely heavily on our wood burning stove for heat. During the night the wind sometimes will blow the smoke and gases back in the house. There have been several times when we have woke up to the alarm. If we hadn't had them we would have been one of those tragic stories on the news.

Wow! A wood burning stove, that must be so nice. I am happy to hear that your alarms keep you safe. Thanks for responding. I do have a question? Do you live in the US? I am just asking because I don't hear of wood burning stoves anymore. I would love to have one, but it would not be a good idea in my apartment! LOL! Take care...

Yes we have two fire and carbon monoxide detectors installed in our house. We check them every few months to be sure they are working proplerly. I am quite obsessive about checking them with our little ones in the house.

Yes, I have a battery carbon monoxide/smoke detector (battery run) and 2 other smoke detectors (electric/battery back up). My landlord had installed them in my apartment and I always replace the batteries once a year even in the electric ones.

Good to hear from you, thanks for responding. I feel good hearing everyone say that they monitor the batteries in their detectors. It is really important. You must have a good landlord, I hear some people say the landlord never installed the carbon detector. I say, "report your landlord for that, I think it is a violation. Take care...
